  • Why do we keep marrying them?

Doc Holiday - couldn?t score:  played scared:  punt festivals

Bill Legg - couldn?t score: wizard of the 3 and out / 2 yards and cloud of dust

Clint Trickett- couldn?t score:  wizard of the 2 yard forward pass, redzone / 3rd down choke artist

We have a type as they say

Can we get an offensive minded coach?

GIBSON DID NOT PLAY AT WVU- Gibson has loyalty to the state of WV, not WVU itself..

He spent like 12-13 years at WVU.  I hope the guy gets a shot somewhere and wins big and makes millions.  I d prefer an offensive minded coach, I want to score points.

It?s not up to me or any fan, but for years now there has been a call to bring high powered offense back to Marshall.

That's what got me thinking this morning after watching the video in another thread.
Why did Brad Smith come back to run Marshall? Because he has a passion for the school.  Why does he help promote WV? Because he has a passion for the state. And maybe that's what he sees in Tony Gibson. Someone who shares a common vision for the state they grew up in.  Someone who made it out and wants to come back to help and inspire others like Brad does.

Just a thought that maybe it's deeper than just money.

While I agree, my personal thought is if one could see the paper trail, it's all about money.  Neither Spears or Smith have a relationship with Gibson, that I'm aware of, and this is a relationship business.  This smells of a substantial donation to MU in some form (maybe not athletics) for looking at or taking a shot on Gibson.  JMO

Possible,  with Gibson's ties to the state I'm  sure he know some influential people around WV, howver, this feels way different than DOC 2.0

He was being courted by Charlotte and  last year was a candidate for the Duke  job...

He should stay there and ask for 2 million.  At least Pruett recruited offensive players before Marshall and he brought the ?Fun and Gun? from Florida.

I looked at Gibson?s all time best recruits and they were mostly defensive players.

Edit: he actually recruited a Guard and a running back.

Denard Robinson?  Turned out to be a pretty good  college Qb  I would say

Gibson: The last time we went in, I know we took a private plane and took our whole offensive staff except for our offensive line coach, everybody else was down there. Myself, Coach [Fred] Jackson, Coach Smith, Coach Magee, Coach [Tony] Dews. I was the only defensive guy because I was recruiting him. We took everybody in on the last one. It was the last day, a Saturday, and after that it was a dead period.

  • Horrible hire. NC St defense is trash. Gave up 30.5 points a game this year and when we played them last year we put up 42 points on his defense and as everyone knows we didn't even have an offense.

Here is a conspiracy theory for you. I wonder if there is a connection between Verna Gibson and Tony Gibson. The Gibsons made Mark Snyder the Marshall football coach. I doubt he is related to Jim and Verna, but we all know that Brad will hire coaches due donations like Dan.

This smells of getting a local guy, fairly cheap, who's from WV, understands the area, doesn't have an issue with the area and can relate. I think the MU brass is jaded on outsiders coming here and deciding they don't like it. Hell, Tom Herrions family stayed in Pittsburgh while he was here. You never saw the Huff family out and about, nor at any of the games, I have never seen a picture of them at a game. It's fine that someone doesn't like Huntington, I don't on some levels, but I think the MU brass needs a guy who can live here and deliver the message that this can be a great place to play football.
Gibson would not be my choice, but again, it's Marshall. The words national search are not in their vocabulary. jmho

The oldest son played on the travel basketball team for the Complex in Proctorville last year. Really good ball player and seems like a great kid.

I see them downtown on a fairly regular basis. He works long hours and they have 3 kids, so not nearly as much now as a few years ago. I also have enough mutual friends to know all the rumors about them hating Huntington are grossly exaggerated.

I wish he was staying just to see what the OC and the offense can pull off next season but I'm also not particularly heartbroken that he's leaving.  His players adore him, which probably means a lot of them are hitting the portal or leaving with him, which sucks. I also don't like how it's going down or who is likely replacement is but when it comes down to it, while I think he's a great recruiter, he's basically a Doc-level HC.

But just like Doc or Dan, any issues I have with him are coaching. It has nothing to do with him personally, his family, or anything like that. They're all good guys.

I just hope our fans start new fresh rumors about Gibson.  I'm tired of the self loathing and recycled rumor we've used on Gilbert, Herrion, and Huff
