  • While both of their football teams play for conference championships, on the soccer pitch the Herd takes on SMU at 7 PM for a chance to make its 2nd NCAA Final Four in 5 years.

Making the College Cup twice in 5 years would really make a statement for Coach Grassie and Marshall University.  To climb that mountain twice in a short period of time is evidence of a great program, not just one great year.

We've made the NCAA tournament 6 years in a row, and the Sweet 16 in 5 of those 6 years.  Grassie has reached a solid, sustainable level of superior soccer.  But this is the first year since the National Championship that we've made it a step further to the Elite 8.  Making the College Cup again would really put Grassie on the map as one of the top 10 college soccer coaches in the country, which can only help recruiting, future OOC matches, and continued buy-in by Marshall fans.

Whether you love soccer or not, support this team.  Outside of the amazing 10-year run we had in I-AA football, Marshall has never had a sports run like this.  If the Herd wins today, Grassie may be able to take us a step higher.

  • Excellent post.  Our soccer program has become very good year in year out.  Difficult to sustain that in any sport.  Kudos to the coaches and players.  Big game for the program today.  I agree it would put a stamp on the level we have reached.  Think we have a good chance to make if we continue to eliminate mistakes on the back end.  Too bad the game is the same time as the football game.  Big day for Marshall sports.  Should be fun!

  • Getting back to the Elite 8 was good to see. It?s been a while.

Getting back to college cup would be huge.

We have been playing good soccer lately so hopefully that continues.

I agree with you completely.  I believe Grassie is already an elite college soccer coach.  But believing that, thinking that is one thing.  Having the resume, the championships, the Final Fours (College Cups) that prove to everyone else you are an elite college soccer coach is something else entirely.  Now, that we've made the Cup twice, with completely different players, puts Grassie at a new level and forces everyone else in the college soccer world to recognize he's currently one of the best.
