  • Here's the deal, Huff wanted out and had been actively seeking other jobs behind Marshall's back. Since the win over Notre Dame, Huff and his agent had been contacting other schools about an opening every season. Trust became an issue, when Huff wouldn't agree ( to a buyout in his contract). That's why a contract extension never happened. AD Spears, and Marshall President Smith wanted to keep Huff here and could never get an agreement on the extension. Huff contacted a few schools during this season. Huff personally flew down to Southern Miss about becoming their head coach. Southern Miss AD, contacted AD Spears to get permission to interview Huff. AD Spears, and President Smith felt a major "betrayal" even though they tried to retain coach Huff, but the trust had eroded beyond repair. When that happened Huff seen the writing on the wall and it was no return at the point. If Huff could have played his cards right, he would be sitting good going into next season, especially if Braxton and Doege returned. As it turns out, Huff is back to square one rebuilding a team that's been losing the last several years. Based on Huff's character it wouldn't surprise me that he will do the same at Southern Miss. I hate to lose Huff, but integrity and trust are crucial to maintaining a winning brand. I hope Gipson we pick up the pieces and keep winning. Gipson should be working on keeping Braxton and Doege.

So basically the same thing we already knew.  Except maybe Huff's lie about not seeking a job AT USM.

  • That makes sense and is basically the same thing I have heard from others.  I hate that it happened like this.  I think Huff did some really good things here, obviously.   Would have like to have seen what he could have done over the next 2-3 years.  It sounds like the buyout was the biggest issue.  I would imagine almost all college coaches have a buyout.  Thank him for what he did and with him well.

Have to hope that Gibson can come in and get the momentum going.  Will be tough to do as I would imagine several players and coaches will leave with Huff.  I would guess at least 20 players.  I imagine Gibson is very well aware of this and hopefully he has a good plan moving forward for Marshall football.  Could be an interesting bowl game.

Well there was a few more in depth details about why there wasn't a contract extension from the administration. Both Spears and Smith tried to make that happen. Huff at his last official press conference admitting he made mistakes. I think Huff realized that staying here was in his best interest, but he had burnt down to many bridges and it was time to move on. So many people were giving Smith and Spears hell over not signing Huff, they tried very hard and it just didn't work out.

Yeah, a lot there. Hate it became what it did. And that Huff has been actively lying to our fanbase.

Regardless, time to move on. Thanks E-man!

Now the work begins on keeping Doege and Braxton at all costs!

It's just a lot to digest. Time to get past that, as last night was the cleansing some of us needed. I admit to being hyper critical. But no sense in holding that down anymore.

Now time to get back on the Herd train. We're all fans, and we all process things differently.

  • I think most knew Huff has wanted out of Huntington pretty much since he arrived. He got what he wanted.
I'm thankful for his time here. This season in particular and for running a clean program. I have little doubt his players love him and gave it all they had for him. That's the sign of a good coach.

That said; Don't let the door hit you in the ass. We're off to the next one. Go Herd!

Thanks E. I heard essentially the same thing and it was more about trust than anything else. At some point  you have to decide to move on and not look back.

Saying it was out of his control is like throwing lit matches into the woods and saying the forest fire is out of your control.  That last press conference made be feel bad for him like he had no choices.  Well F him.  Fool me once.
He should have said I want to stay here but I don't know how to get back to where that's possible after all the %^&* I pulled.  Would have been more accurate yet still sympathy inducing.

  • You are missing a very key bit of info.

    What was the buyout?

    It was very one sided.

So was it a real offer?

  • I don't see the Trust issue issue here at all, unless there was a promise or a pledge to do nothing, then yes. Otherwise, one works for themselves when they must. You can not tell me that if Brad Smith wanted Huff here, he wouldn't be here right now. Tell me something else he wanted since he arrived that hasn't happened.  This was a "tit for tat" thing, and neither were willing to give a little.  Brad has/had the power to win, and I'm suspecting he thinks he did.

    QB Robert Shockey (Cabell-Midland)
    LB Cannon Lewis (Cabell-Midland)
    OL Robby Martin (Huntington HS)

Wonder if any of these guys might be interested in coming home to the Herd?

  • This reminds me of a divorce.  Depending on who's related to which spouse.....that's the story.

You can't tell me we could not have kept him. And if that happened, thank him and let him go, spears issued statement appreciating his transparency.

    Over now, let's go Gibby.

Apparently WVU money men tired of WVU's antics, so they back the coal fields kid and want him coaching here and are feeding us cash to be successful.  They probably want WV represented in the playoff and know WVU is never getting there via the Big 12.

No he won?t. He won?t be there long enough, his agent is already looking for an escape route.

What he will do is roll into town with some of our players, hit the portal hard and upgrade their talent and win somewhere between 5-7 games next year. Their attendance will increase because they have a great fanbase and they will be excited. If he wins 7 games and gets them bowl eligible he will get a better offer and bolt.  If he wins 5 he will be stuck there for another year, but will win 7 in 2026 and then be gone.

Huff will probably pull a Sun Belt version of Cignetti. If the guy could get some dudes to come to Marshall, he will get Southern ballers to come to USM. There is some serious talent in the south.

What the big question mark is what can Gibson do as a head coach? Instead of Marshall fans dogging on Huff's ass, we might want to see what kind of guy this hire is. He has his work cut out for him & he needs to get busy. The culture within the locker room this season under Huff was tremendous. It showed as we finished with 7 straight wins...many on the road. Gibson has to make proper hires within his staff. Maybe the base on here will understand that at some point. We better start worrying about what our new coach can do instead continually dogging on Huff who just got 10 wins and a championship. Mr. Gibson hasn't won a college game as a head coach yet. If we are going to hype him, then with hype comes expectations.
