  • Crazy that we just won a SBC Championship and our football program simultaneously looks more bush league than ever.

Losing a HFC to an in-conference school should never happen. But losing a HFC to an in-conference trash program shouldn't even be possible - especially one in a town that is no better and has nothing more to offer (culturally or otherwise) than Huntington. This is the lateral move of all lateral moves. I don't care who said or did what...this should never happen.

Does this set a precedent? Our coaches now don't leave for P4 jobs...they leave for sh!tty in conference jobs in other sh!tty towns. In the middle of the Championship high I think we set a new low.

30 years ago, as an FCS program, we lost our HC to the SEC. That coach didn't take a position coach role, or coordinator position, he became the HC at that storied SEC school.

NOW. Our coaches are leaving for other in conference crappy G5 jobs? It's gross. It's not even like he is leaving for the MWC which is the premier G5 conference this year.

Then...there's talks of the new Head Coach having to take a pay cut to come here? Like we can't even match his non HC salary here AS a head coach? We are going to increase his responsibility 10 fold and then give him a pay cut? That's laughable.

We look really bad right now...

Says Huff was offered a deal with a large buyout clause. And he objected. I mean, isn't it then on Marshall to come back with a new offer lowering the buyout a bit?

It's not JUST Huff we are losing. It's his staff and many really good players. Notably Braxton and Turner.

In another thread someone said Huff wanted no buyout.  If true, wouldn't it also be on him to concede as well?

maybe, but there needs to be commitment on both sides and the deal has to work for both sides....Do you want  huff to be able to walk  with little recourse?

Yes. That's been my contention this entire time. Both sides needed to lay their pride aside, and neither did. So that's the most disheartening thing is that so many egos took control. On both sides.

The only thing we can hope for now is that Gibson continues this upward trend.

  • Who cares about optics. Those small details will arise and probably sooner than later.  Also, if Huff was so great of a HC, then why has he not gotten a shot from a G5 school yet.  Lastly, he was going to leave sooner than later (he showed that from the start).

I'm happy we had Huff. He succeeded in making us relevant again even if it quickly ends.

Coach Huff thought he was above the school, administration, AD and the President. He thought and expected that he would have total control to get whatever he wanted while he was here. Control like Saban had at Alabama...

Sorry, but Huff is no Nick Saban. And unless something changes and he gets another offer today, he's starting all over again with a bottom 3 FBS progam at the moment.

As for players leaving?....Time to get over that with todays college landscape. Players will come and go from here out.

Huff will take some coaches and players with him no doubt. Tony Gibson will do the same for us when he arrives.

As for Braxton?.....More than likely goes the portal route to see what schools will offer him. He's likely to land a better deal than what Southern Miss can offer. And think about it.....why would an upcoming senior QB want to go to a place like Southern Miss to be part of a total rebuild when he only has one year to play? Not likely to happen IMO. I think Braylen ends up at a P4 school and if he doesnt have that offer then he's back with us.

  • Agreements by coach Huff were broken and many extension offers were declined.  Not sure how this is MU fault.  But carry on.

No way to know this.  One thing I can tell you is Gibson has his work cut out for him.  This team most likely will return nothing.  Not like when Huff took over and he took over a roster that just played for a championship.  Gibson won?t have that advantage with the transfer portal rules now in place. When unlimited transfers happened in 2021 it drastically changed how a coach must operate.

  • Looking on the bright side, maybe Gibson will be able to bring in some NC State or ACC players that he knows are not starting but has a relationship with that he can offer playing time here.

  • What coach signs a contract with no buy out in this era. Zero.

I appreciate how professional he has been this season, and how he's kept the team focused on a goal. Even if that was self serving for him. But he (and the admin) have kept quiet with the details and no one has bad mouthed the other.

But at least now we know he had a contract on the table, even after a poor season finish last year, showing our admin was forward thinking and betting on him to keep growing. That was the time they needed to offer it to him. All coaches contracts have buy-outs. He (and his agent) literally flirted back with anyone who noticed them, regardless of when it was. A large buy-out was perfectly acceptable. That's what sports are now.

While I appreciate all the amazing things he has brought (ND and VT wins, and SBC champ), he made his bed not signing. So it's not on our admin IMO.

I wish nothing for Coach Huff than the best, other than when we play them.

Disagree. I think Braxton will want to go with his coach and Doege and run the same system. Maybe a P5 if the money is a lot more. But I'll guarantee you Huff is talking to donors right nor at SM to get the money to take him. Also take a few other starters along with his portal recruiting. And a few good player already there and huff can turn them around pretty quick.

    Green is NFL bound.

Here's my hope. Maybe a nice fancy NIL deal swoops in to protect Braxton and Turner?
