  • Players went from no leverage to all the leverage.  I'm all for letting guys find the best opportunity.  The one change I'd like to see is to prohibit guys from following a coach when he leaves for at least 1 full season.  No way to stay competitive when coaches are always looking to move up.

  • The portal is hurting college football and frankly many players long term.  A Coach like Saban and others who developed players over their career will influence less total kids.  I suspect player development overall will suffer over time.  If allowed to continue as is then this will eventually ruin college sports.  The current rules need adjustment.
I don't like to lose, and that isn't so much because it is just a football game, but because defeat means the failure to reach your objective. I don't want a football player who doesn't take defeat to heart, who laughs it off with the thought, 'Oh, well, there's another Saturday.' The trouble in American life today, in business as well as in sports, is that too many people are afraid of competition. The result is that in some circles people have come to sneer at success if it costs hard work and training and sacrifice.- Knute Rockne

But what you're missing, is that everyone gets a trophy in today's society. I don't think it's right, but that's how it appears to be.

  • The portal for most is pursuing money but only a smaller percentage end up with life changing money and I am willing to bet most of those will waste much of the money before 30.  There were always a decent percentage of guys that made it to the NFL that developed over 4 to 5 years in one program.  The players jumping around programs will find their overall development falls short.  Less project players will make it to the NFL.

  • My question is whether or not Coach Jacobs will consider offering any of the guys that enter the portal, or even allow them to come back.

  • Yep... I wish things were different, but I can't place the blame on any athlete looking for the best opportunity. I'd say it probably doesn't have anything to do with Huff or Gibson either. In fact, Huff named it last night. It's all about the "me-first" culture, and the reality is, even if you're not that type of person, you basically can't afford not to turn into that type of person.

  • There are over 13,000 FBS players. Less than 500 get paid meaningful NIL and less than 100 get ?life changing money?. Somebody like Mr. Montgomery might be able to pull a few grand a season.

The only thing the portal is hurting is our short term fandom. The portal is probably what gave us a Sun Belt Championship this year. The portal (and NIL) is also what has given us one of the greatest / most competitive College Football Seasons of all time. More parity than ever before...talent more evenly spread out than ever before. It helps us. Let's not complain about it. We'll lose a ton of players each year...and we'll pick up a ton of talent that we could have never been able to pick up before - each year.  The best proven players in the MAC, CUSA, and FCS should be our primary recruiting ground. Having a coach who can navigate the transfer portal and NIL may be the most important thing now. We are witnessing the greatest, most entertaining, most fair era of college football ever. Alabama couldn't even make a 12 team playoff this year - large part because of the TP & NIL.

Agree completely.  Look at the playoff this year.  There have been many previous years when you had an Alabama or a Georgia or a Clemson clearly heads and heels above everyone else.  Not this year.  If you look at every team in there, all 12 of them, not a single one can say they are a lock to even make it to the final.  And, it wouldn't surprise you even a little if any of them got beaten in their first game.  No, Marshall won't get to watch an Ahmad Bradshaw or a Chad Pennington play for 3-4 years because if they are that good, they'll go get paid at a P4 school.  But, there are also excellent P4 players who might be sitting second team there who transfer to Marshall.  The portal is exactly why we have a championship this year.

  • The portal needs restrictions. 2 big ones would fix almost all of the issues

    1. The portal is only open from February 1st-August 1st. Can't jump into the portal between August 2nd and January 31st. That would eliminate these mid-season portal entries as well as kids hitting the portal and not playing in bowl games etc.

    2. Student-athletes get 1 and only 1 anytime transfer with no restriction. After that, transferring again would mean you were ineligible for 365 days.
