  • Morning friends. Two questions on the Huff contract talks.

First, does anyone know for a fact if there was a contract offered at all by Marshall to Huff this year? Were there literally only two contract talks prior to this year that went down?

Second, there have been reports of Marshall offering a steep buyout clause, a standard practice, which Huff did not want.

But the question I have is... did Huff really want to sign a deal with zero buyout in the contract? Meaning, is it true that Huff's agency really wanted a new deal with no buyout?

That seems to be a point of contention with Southern Miss fans. Would like some clarity thanks guys.

Well again I say this because this seems to be a point of contention that Southern Miss fans are bragging about. So the clarification is helpful. Specifically on the buyout talks.

  • I think they are valid questions. Instead of downplaying it, how about let's see if somebody who has knowledge can reply first.

    Thanks!

  • Problem is that it is all hearsay. But I heard we offered multiple contracts and he also wanted no buyout or very little buyout. Also heard there is much more to the store.

It's ok to strive for more than hearsay. These are questions journalists and newspapers used to pry in.

I would like to know specifics.

There are enough threads out there to get you what you're looking for.  It's all hearsay.  If you want direct answers, email Smith or Spears and get back with us what they tell you.  They are the only ones that know.

  • The point is moot!

I disagree. I think it would be helpful for all of the fans who are continually questioning the athletic director and president. I know I was hypercritical of them this weekend, but as time has gone on and with more information I think the picture is becoming much more clear that Huff really was a massive driving factor in his own release.

And I think the two questions I asked will help a lot of the fans on the fence if we can get clarity.

For the "normies" fans, not everyone has time to dig through multiple threads.

    A clarification thread is needed.

  • Smith and spears wanted huff to sign a huge buyout agreement. Huff was smart not too. It wasn't an offer it was joke. Huff laughed and walked as he should have.

    Start here:  athleticdirector@marshall.edu
Again, nothing on these message is concrete.  It's all hearsay.  As Muther said, it's a moot point anyway.  Huff's gone and Gibson's here.  GO HERD!!

That is the only concrete part which the ESPN notes. Our buyout offer.

What I think a lot of fans who are upset would like to know is the other end.

Let me clarify as well, I am not longer in the upset camp. But facts will help our program to move on. Simple.

Was Huff's agent that foolish to retort with a zero buyout proposal?

    Here's a thread.  Read E-man's comment.  https://www.herdfans.com/12thman/index.php?topic=119323.0
That's mostly how it played out.  Again, nobody on these boards knows exactly.  However, trust issues became the biggest topic.
As far as the buyout, Huff wanted 0 (ZERO) buyout.  MU wanted more to the buyout. Neither side could agree.

See that's the thing that is insane, if true, that Huffs agent came back with a zero buyout offer.

This is a classic case of an agent really botching things for his client. Good deal, I think the more people that see this the more healing will come.

So here are the facts as we know them. We offered Huff two contracts that he turned down between 2021 to 2023, we did not offer him anything all year in 2024, so no talks took place all of 2024. The last time we had conversations on contract talks, we offered a large buyout, they (Huff's agency) countered with a zero buyout proposal.

Huff knew the writing was on the wall at that point, that negotiations completely broke down with Marshall. Which is why he panicked and reached out to Southern Miss or probably others. But we know for a fact Southern Miss.

Does this all seem to track with everybody?

Who freakin cares what they think. They got their man, they can have him. He won't be as successful there, too much of a rebuild. He wanted more money, no buyout and we couldn't agree to that, nor afford it. Thus, he took his ball and went elsewhere. Appreciate this year and his efforts, but it's done. Time to move forward.

A terrible job and Hattiesburg is a shite hole. Makes Huntington seem like NYC from what I've seen of it.

    LMAO!

The 4 years with that guy were filled with more drama than from 80% of the chicks I've dated.

    Buh-bye Huff...........GFY pal.

To agree to a no buyout clause would have been stupid, poor business, and hurt Marshall. We aren't flush with cash.

Lol. On one end I agree with you, Huff himself brought a lot of drama to the equation.

But we do have to admit, he kept a clean program, and many of his players had their head on straight. I don't think enough Marshall fans really appreciate that.
