One saying that existed up until the portal was about a Coach "building a program in the right way". That reference was to the programs that developed players over a career. The portal has obviously changed that entire dynamic. The old Kansas State system of bringing in a heavy dose of JUCO talent each year is the closest in the old system to what many programs are trying today.
I think that the modern era with the portal will eventually produce a range of approaches. Huff fit right in with trying to load up quickly, with a heavy consideration to enhance his future opportunities. He clearly had a message to players to "enhance their value" which will fit with some recruits. There will be plenty of other coaches taking the same approach. I am hoping Gibson will lean towards a program builder with use of the portal to fill gaps as needed. Every program will deal with the portal, but I think some will still be able to sell more than instant pay days.
