  • I believe we all think Gibson being signed to a 6 year contract seems a little different than other coach's first contracts.

I have no information on this - but wonder if the length of the contract is tied into Gibson qualifying for and receiving a State of WV pension when he retires.  He has already worked a number of years as a public employee in WV - he may need another 6 years to qualify for the state retirement.  This would also help explain why he would sign to coach at Marshall for less money than he was making at NCS.

    Just a thought.

Or they think it will take six years to get out of this hole?

He is taking a pay cut to come here. In return we are giving his some security.

No no no no no no no no ....we better not be doing this. Why do our fans even think like this? This isn't a charity. He should be fired in 2 years if he doesn't win more than 4 games a year. If we are even remotely thinking about something like this...this program isn't worth following. Backwards as hell. Other teams are trying to win at all costs and we are trying to secure someone's retirement/doing a favor for a "friend"?? BARF!!!

It's sad if he is taking a pay cut to come here. So we want him to do 10 or 20 times more than he does now for less?

And we should never give a coach "security". The only thing that gives a coach security is winning. I mean it's not a crazy concept...that's how the rest of college athletics works.

  • The President said he?s going to take us to the next level.  We only have 2 levels left to win the title.
    1. Qualify for Playoffs
    2. Win playoffs

IDK about where people get the idea  that university employees are in the state retirement system, especially the recent ones.
Maybe older staff and faculty are grandfathered in, but Marshall does  a percent matching into TIAA CREF, which is common practice through higher ed, stae subsidized or private.

Next year going to burn!!  All joking aside, I think Gibby does well here long term, especially if what I hear about nil increases for him are true.  Honestly we should be a perineal power in this league with most any coach.  Potentially, we may have sacrificed a potential big season next year with Huff returning, looked to be set for other title run and with out of conference schedule??? Yikes.

But we will never know.  All good, this year was fun! Disappointed we aren't bouncing off walls for this bowl and ranked opponent, but it is what it is.

I feel good about Gibby so onwards and upward!

  • What exactly are you hearing about the NIL increase? Any specific numbers?

  • First of all, Huff is gone and I hope Gibson is successful. I agree that next season looks bleak.

A lot of things have been posted including that coal money was used to pay his Marshall salary, but now I am reading that he took a pay cut. I am also reading big increases in NIL, but again we not using the new donor/NIL money to pay his salary.

I am going to wait until Gibson's press conference to find out what is going on with investment in Marshall football. I want to see the details of the contract including the financial assistance for assistant coaches and his staff. Then I compare to what Huff received. That will tell me a lot about what Marshall is doing with the football program.

Was perennial the word you were going for, there?  I agree, though, if the NIL system is in place it should just be a matter of plug n play to fill holes and keep moving forward at this level.  The only problem is that all the teams in the East division know how to do this too. sp,e ,pre successful than others.  We'll always find winning this division a challenge.  Another reason Huff took the West job I'm sure is that they always suck or fall apart.  Easier path.  More likely to only have one dominant team.
