  • 3 of the outgoing transfers are rated 4 stars: https://247sports.com/college/marshall/season/2025-football/transferportal/?institutionkey=24052

Maybe Huff was telling them to come to the Sunbelt, get their stats up, and then they could transfer out to bigger programs. I think two have already committed to SEC schools.i question some of the ratings though. Ian Foster rated 0 stars? That can't be right.

I hope Gibson can bring us in another top 15 transfer class.

Not sure when this record is dated, but I noticed only 1 transfer out has a final destination at this point. (Of course we have also heard that Cole Pennington is headed to Gardner Webb ....faith and football, maybe a great decision for him.)

  • Most of our transfers do not have a destination yet, Couple of linebackers have been picked up, one to UK and one to Mississippi, I would think both of those players would have been highly rated.

  • With all that's happened, how would you feel about Marshall not allowing a single one, who committed to the portal and informed the school they wouldn't play in the bowl game, come back if they don't find a home elsewhere?

    IMO...No!

  • The one thing Huff could do was recruit in today's portal. I hope Gibson can do the same and he should because he will have more money than Huff did. So we will find out I guess.

My knee-jerk reaction is why be vindictive?
If they can help the new Coach win and/or reinforce the message that Marshall is a special place, why not?

  • I would think maybe you would be willing to take someone back, but there would have to be a time limit.  If you change your mind after making an emotional decision, you have until X date to change your mind and return.  Not sure what that date should be as I am not aware of the end date to enter the portal and make your decision where you might go.  I would make it a relatively small window.

I'd make the decision on a case by case basis. Coaches have to assume anyone entering the portal is gone, but have they found a replacement yet? I'm sure there's other factors to consider too. Maybe they weren't that good and we'd rather have the open slot to fill than have them to return?

  • I ask because of the huge, embarrasing debacle that is "this year", each person who chose the portal and said they wouldn't play in the bowl game contributed to all this.  So I don't know, maybe a bit of a different approach this year. Was just wondering how folks see it all.  So really, are there two choices, 1. Choosing the portal  2. Choosing not to play in the bowl game

  • If we have recruited that spot equal to or better than that individual, I tell them to keep walking. If I think they would help the team, it would be foolish to not take them back. Keep in mind though another portal opens in the spring and we will lose and add at that time too. Always keeping a few scholarships is wise for those gems that need a home in the summer.

Not going to happen, we are actively going after several of them. In fact, While I don't have the specifics, I  heard we are putting together a package for Braxton that will be our biggest NIL offer ever.

  • Players were smart going into portal.   Maybe some don?t really want leave but have increased their value.  Now MU has to pony up to get them back but at a higher rate.  Nil funds need to increase yearly bc players feel they have outperformed their contract.  To keep beat guys Herd will need to increase them each year.  Their leverage if MU isn?t acting is to hit open market then Herd tries to get them back.  Smart move by good players.

    Good point.
That argument hasn't been made until now, unless I missed it.

  • They aren't college student athletes anymore.  They are commodities with a market value...literally.  The kids in the portal with visits and offers have a market value.  The kids who don't have offers by this time should think about coming back.  Then Gibby will have to decide if he wants them or not.

Then there are kids like Sappy who says he wants to be here.  Those are the type of kids that I root for.

  • I promise I am not self-promoting, I am just trying to answer some questions from above. On the portal tracker I am posting in the ThunderCast Transfer Portal Tracker thread, I am also adding destinations when the outgoing transfers commit to other schools. So far:

JJ Hawkins, Defensive Line - Committed to Southern Miss
Landyn Watson, Linebacker - Committed to Kentucky
Bralon Brown, Wide Receiver - Committed to Southern Miss

Jaden Yates did not commit to Mississippi. He tweeted that he was visiting them and a national tracker listed him as committing there. Jaden is still visiting other schools.

Several of our transfers have gotten a lot of attention from big schools.

Minnesota isn't big, just in a big conference.  They haven't been big since Craig T Nelson coached there.
