  • Spears hasn?t handled this well, but what did you all really expect?? He fired a baseball coach less than a week after they had a photo op of him holding a fat check. He extended the volleyball coach because he thinks she?s hot. He hired the new women?s basketball coach even though the hiring committee did not agree he went around them for ?his pick?. And now this football situation. He brags about hiring 9 or 10 head coaches since he?s been here 3 or 4 years. And we?ve went back to the old Marshall way on this HC hire which I hope Gibson can take us to new levels. But there wasn?t a national search done?this was planned and had the support of Coach Pruett who we all LOVE don?t get me wrong, but this has disaster written all over it.
Explain this, please.  Who did the hiring committee want?  This is not my understanding of the hiring of the women's bball coach.  Looking for clarity.  thx

  • there's been a lotta comments on here about playing the bowl "for the seniors."  would like to know how many SRs were among the "opt outs?"  or how many SRs were all about encouraging the underclassmen to enter the portal?  idk how many SRs we had on the team, but if playing the game meant that much to them, & they said as much, i guess it's safe to say our SR class didn't get a whole lot of respect from their teammates?

I get all of that and agree.  My question was about the women's basketball coach.  I bolded that in the posters comment.

That is an interesting point about the seniors. I wonder if and how many seniors have opted out of the game? The only social media I saw was from the one senior who was upset about not having a banquet. Not a peep about the situation from the seniors about who isn't or is interested in playing the game. One would think they would take to social media if they were upset about not playing in the bowl game. On the other hand, if they have opted out they would probably be silent for obvious reasons. I find this very interesting we are not seeing comments from the seniors on the various social media outlets.

agree.  you'd think multiple SRs would post, at least, a general message about being disappointed in SOMEONE (admin?  fleeing asst coaches?  opt-out teammates?) about not getting 1 more chance to play.

  • Let's just stop with the 75 game. We quit this year plain and simple. Either the administration quit or the players did. Regardless just stop pretending to honor them.

  • I?m sure Dobson has his reasons for doing whatever he is doing.  He?s on the inside, locker room and coaches meetings.  He knows more about all of this than any of us probably do. He?s doing what he feels is the right thing to do.  Tough for him bc it?s his alma mater.  Aaron Dobson deserves none of the blame for the botched miscalculated debacle by our athletic Dept.

  • I'm sure glad that this administration wasn't in charge in 1971. There's not much that will change my mind when it comes to quitting.

Burdette. Spears did not want to pay her appropriately for a first time HC.

So these players opting out and the administration giving up is honoring them?

Fair enough.  Not sure how much consideration she was actually given.  I think she would have been a great choice.  Kind of goes along with all of the recent "coaching searches".  The Fulks hire was recommended by a member of the BOG whose daughter played for her at Transylvania.

Just curious, are you saying the Spears wasn't the identifier of Fulks as a potential candidate for our women's basketball team?  If so, that is amusing, as he made it sound like he had his eye on here for ever; so ready to be our next coach.

That's what I typed and what I was told.  Did a little google work when it happened and it all made sense.  The former player is a GA on the women's team this year.  Maybe Fulks was recommended when we hired Caldwell by the same person and that's when he had his eye on her.  Spears hasn't been in a position of hiring coaches until he got here.  Follow the money ;-)

I?ve started wondering the same thing after her did not renew the contract of Jeff Small, the track coach.  That was a real head scratcher.

Agree. That was a head scratcher. Jeff Small was great.

I was wondering why Burdette was not promoted as the head coach. I thought she was the one that should have been the next hire to keep Caldwells system in place here. Just unbelievable.

  • An AD should promote within on staffs that had great success.  The AD does not do searches.  He has a very lazy philosophy going about this stuff.  Been that way for awhile.

Totally agree. Its a no-brainer to promote within on a staff that has had great success like Kim did (And doing now at Tennessee). I just thought all along that Burdette would have been the logical pick to keep the system in place. People close to Kim have said that Burdette is her right hand person and that Burdette is a huge reason why that system even works to begin with. Nothing against Fulks and I hope she does well but when you win a conference championship with a system like that its imperative to keep that in place IMO.
