  • I don't know how to copy and paste this, so I'll just type it.  "We're extremely disappointed in Marshall's decision to back out of their commitment to play in the Independence Bowl," Nick Carparelli, the executive director of Bowl Season, said in a interview with The Athletic.  "We saw statistics recently on the number of players that opted out, and it seems to us that there was (sic) plenty of able bodies to field a football team."

I would echo the sentiments of Mr. Carparelli.  Here is a link to his relationship with Bowl Season

  • What a disgusting turn of events. Confirms what some of us already knew. They QUIT. Since the couldn?t put their best product on the field they took the easy way out. I?m embarrassed as a fan.

  • School quit on the players before the bowl.  Something about all of this Huff stuff etc never seemed right.  The blame one person attack was fishy from the jump.  I just hope Gibson can recruit well bc Huff was crushing the portal and bringing in SEC players not 0 stars.  MU lesson learned hopefully ..... keep good and championship head coaches that the players adore.

  • MU needs to come out with the facts as to why we couldn?t play the game or it will never die.

But they will be MU facts.  I think MU facts might be different than the total truth.  Slanted I say

We know how many portal entries there are.  But how many opted out?  Injuries? How many available at each position before?

  • Another fan exodus coming...

It's just getting embarrassing now. It's hard to find words at how inept Marshall athletics is. It's such a waste.

  • The worst thing is Marshall kept telling the Independence Bowl all week they?d be able to play. Then at the last minute cancels. It?s such a bad look for Marshall from the outside. We?ll end up 12-0 next year and end up in the Hawaii or Bahamas Bowl against a 6-6 MAC team. This decision will cost our teams for a while. Absolute embarrassment from Spears

  • I will not pass judgement until all of the facts are known.  It may not be the total players available but if we didn't have enough offensive linemen then you can't play the game.

I am going to email Spears and Smith in the hopes they will publish the facts.

I don?t have an inside line, but I was told by someone who does that there were 41 players available for the bowl, and of those 41, only three were offensive linemen. I have no way to verify this but it makes the most sense.

I am not saying what you say is true or not.

My whole issue is that we have continued to not get out in front of these issues. Explanations, instead of blanket statements, are needed. People take offense to these constructive criticisms (which I never understood). But it just hasn't been a good look from the constant silence.

It's called poor leadership. Hasn't communication been the complaint for decades? It may be worse now than ever.

    Get serious.

105 guys on the roster. 30 players in portal leaves 75 guys minus injured players.

Every guy on the team played football their entire lives and typically played both ways. We could have fielded a team and chose not to.

Someone above mentioned an exodus of fans. I can?t speak for others but I owe nothing to this University. I started watching in the 80s then fell in love during the 90s. We were the small school with a chip on our shoulders, ?if your scared get a dog? mentality.

Now we forfeit games because we only have 75 players (or even if we only have 40 it?s enough to play.)

I would have respected the hell out of this program had we showed up with 40-50 guys and got beat 100-0. I probably would have upped my contributions.

Quitting though?. I?m not renewing any of my contributions, and I?m not buying season tickets ever again. Will I show up to a game here and there? Maybe. If it?s a Top 25 type of game then I?ll come cause it?s something to do locally.

This is embarrassing, it?s unacceptable, and I?m not going to be part of this. I have a normal, middle class job. I?m not giving my limited disposable income to a program that doesn?t represent what I stand for.

After the soccer game, I might log out of this place for good. I?m not sure. I hope Gibson can do something to convince myself and others to come back. Hiring Gibson is the ONLY thing that has be even thinking about sticking around.

For the record, I will continue to support the soccer program, but that?s it.

  • What do you think the executive director of bowl season would say?

Bowl season is all about money- that is all. Even the puke bowls pull in viewers and it is teams like Marshall that pull viewers in.

Marshall pulling out removes a conference champion and puts a 5-7 squad in the game. This late withdrawal limited the bowl from getting another conference champion or a program with at least a winning record.

I don't know what the answer is or the right move, I just am legitimately curious as to what you think this guy would say other than ... I'm disappointed and I looked at the ones opting out...

Only thing that bothers me is they reached out to Spears but he didn't return the call. IIRC wasn't it the NYT that incorrectly reported his son was at the shooting in Alabama?

    What I understand.

Last week was finals. There were no practices. Gibson said he was going to talk to the players again on Fri & Sat in order to gauge their attitude towards the portal, Marshall, Bowl etc. Giving the school a week under those circumstances is not really asking too much. The Bowl is still 2 weeks off. Hell during covid they would put matchups together in a week. Two weeks is not asking a lot.
