  • I thought I heard that a large number of ?players went home? and werent on campus to prepare for the bowl?

Something like this, which if true, draws into question how many of the remaining players are committed to playing.

Thank god for the portal and for the 6 year contract on Gibson because I think its gonna take 2-3 years of struggling to hopefully get a sunbelt contender.  We SMU?d death penalty d ourselves.

I hope whomever donor insisted on the Huff out, Gibson in, will pony up some NIL to help reverse the implosion of our program.

  • I don't know how to copy and paste this, so I'll just type it.  "We're extremely disappointed in Marshall's decision to back out of their commitment to play in the Independence Bowl," Nick Carparelli, the executive director of Bowl Season, said in a interview with The Athletic.  "We saw statistics recently on the number of players that opted out, and it seems to us that there was (sic) plenty of able bodies to field a football team."

I would echo the sentiments of Mr. Carparelli.  Here is a link to his relationship with Bowl Season

Not a good look at all.

  • School quit on the players before the bowl.  Something about all of this Huff stuff etc never seemed right.  The blame one person attack was fishy from the jump.  I just hope Gibson can recruit well bc Huff was crushing the portal and bringing in SEC players not 0 stars.  MU lesson learned hopefully ..... keep good and championship head coaches that the players adore.

You don?t keep a coach at all costs, regardless of his record. Other factors come into play. And remember that we went 9-4 in 2022 and then 6-7 in 2023. And that our former head coach was not a hot commodity. He landed at the worst football school in the conference. I have no axe to grind with the man as I?ve never even met him. Just stating facts. Huff has not proved he can have sustained success.

  • What great leaders we have at Marshall right now.
Says the guy who relentlessly bashed Mike Hamrick and pushed for his removal.

His best opportunity to prove sustained success was about to occur here.  Coming off a title everything changes.  He was getting it right here setting it up.  I think 9-4 was a good season with a Top 10 win.

That is your opinion and you are entitled to it. I personally was not impressed with the overall product he put on the field, even at times this year. It certainly is strange to let a wining coach walk these days, especially one who has no clear strikes against him like a major scandal or players constantly in trouble. But the job of a head coach is multifaceted and I choose to believe Marshall leaders made the choice because they believed it to be the right decision for the school and program. I may be putting too much faith in them, but based on what I have seen from afar I choose our admin over Huff.

I think you are putting to much faith in them. And just because they wear green doesn't mean they can walk on water. No matter who is running the university some of you think they can do no wrong.

  • The decision not to go was not taken lightly.
The 'getting out front' is an issue.
However, how are Spears, Smith and the acting coaching staff (who all have their own personal interests at stake) going to immediately know who's available? And the distribution among the position groups?
The pooh-bah of the bowls is only counting
    totals, not the specifics.

I don't know about Spears, but I do have confidence that Smith would base his actions on the best available information available to him.

In memory of Dr Daniel P Babb who taught so much to so many.

  • Right now, the bowl game is set for less than two weeks and we have ONE known holdover coach who was tasked to prepare for this bowl.  How many of Huff?s staff have notified Spears that they are going with Huff?  Are going elsewhere for next season?  New Herd HC has said he is keeping the DL coach from Huff?s staff.  Any others?  New HC hasn?t announced any other staff hiring.   So here as of 12/16, who the hell was to prepare our forty to fifty man squad for this bowl game??

I think Speers is on the road watching the soccer team, all those massive problems that Speers created are Tony Gibson?s problems.  Speers is probably praying for September so he can start the process of scapegoating Tony Gibson.
