  • This kid deserves his chance. Spent his whole young life going to every QB camp and showcase he could find. His dad played for The Herd, he had the pedigree. And I know first hand he has the work ethic and demeanor.

Going into Spring Practice I believe he is going to shine. Be a great story for us and a home grown talent that just as good as a RS Freshman as we could recruit. My .02

  • I thought he looked good in the spring game last year considering he was fresh out of high school. If I had my druthers he would get lots of mop up duty this year behind Braxton and take over in 2026.

Maybe I'm misremembering but I feel like he was getting some hype last year during spring/fall practice. Sounded like he was not that far behind Braxton/Earl. I'm hoping he can be the guy and we don't have to rely on transfer gambles. This is assuming Braxton doesn't return.

  • When he walked into my first basketball practice, without even knowing anything about him, I asked him if he was a QB. First in line, eyes on the coach, first to help others. That to me is elite in itself. And he has the pedigree to back it up. Look at some of his HS camp accomplishments.

  • I am rooting for him to do well.  Should be an interesting next couple of weeks to see how this team will start to take shape.

  • No backup Qb stuck around except him.  And the starter rolled so I?m thinking they knew Long was better than them.  Can he run?  Can he run and take a hit??   How big is he???

FWIW: Isn't Colin Parachek still in the program? Long is listed at 6'2" and 200 pounds on Herdzone, I guess that was his measurements in September?

  • even when taking into consideration that he was a FR, to think he was #4 or 5 last year doesn't do too much to ease the concern at the position.
he could have improved during the season and he can improve now through fall.
i certain hope he makes eye-popping strides.
i just have learned to not hope for something totally different than what common sense would suggest is the true circumstance.
with or without Braxton or Long or Parachek, we need a couple of QBs out of the portal who will complete the group and bring more competition

  • A few people thought Long was playing the best in summer at times.  But who is coaching him now??  Different day now.  We need Braxton back.

I am not sure if he was "#4 or #5 last year"? He was taking a red shirt year and probably ran the scout team. He was never in the mix for the QB position; maybe that was a factor for Cole transferring since he saw a potentially better player behind him?

that may be true.   i wonder why he redshirted or maybe a better question would be was a redshirt unavoidable for whichever reason/s?   if the redshirt was avoidable and he was say, in the top two or three, wouldn't he have suited up on game day especially if a lame duck coach's future was on the line?

The majority of freshmen QB at this level usually red shirt their first year. Some of the really great freshmen QB at the P5 level might see the playing field in their freshman year, but they are on a different level. Most freshmen football players at all positions usually red shirt their first year. The red shirt year gives them a chance to mature physically and mentally, since it is a big jump from high school.

  • I hope he?s great.  But a year being #2 behind Braxton would be the best thing to happen.  Give the HC more time to get his players in.  Braxton I think holds out for awhile.  Our entire OL is gone except Slappy I believe.

Correct, all seniors I believe.  But I believe in Crill,  he did a heck of a job this year and hopefully can replicate that success.

    So Crill is staying?

That?s good news as O Line was much better this year, even though we had plenty of talent years prior in the Fluff era and looked bad

That tells me Crill was the reason, but football gurus please chime in

  • I hate to rain on the parade but I watched him play several games at Hurricane and although he has potential, he looks more suited to a program at a smaller school in a lower division. He is not another Braxton from what I saw. Hopefully, he will develop into a great QB for us if ... we ever have an effective QB coach. Seems like a fine young man and I wish him all the best.

Well, you had better tell Miami of Ohio; Toledo; Memphis; ECU; Appy State; Arkansas State and some FCS schools since they offered him scholarships. He did very well when he played at Archbishop Hoban High School the year before winning an Ohio high school championship. Maybe he was playing at Hurricane with a bad supporting case, I don't think Hurricane is a hotbed of college talent.

Seriously; maybe he is the next Cole Pennington who is definitely not a D1 player. Let's wait until spring practice to see what is his potential, before you thrown him under the bus.

  • The rumor is he looked good.  His spring game numbers or summer scrimmage whichever were good.  HS is HS.  Doesn?t mean anything once you get into a college program.
