  • It?s not the coach people.  We went Pennington, Leftwich with Kresser for a year.  Forest Gump could have coached those teams to 40 a game.

Pennington and Leftwich were not known, by and large, as great QBs until they got here and got developed.  Who do you think did that?  There's more to coaching than calling plays.  Forest Gump would not have got them here, got them developed, and put a winning team around them.  The winningest team of the 90s was not led by some Maroon out of Alabama.

  • I hold hope in Long, early in practice last year, there was talk of him playing the best of all the QBs.  He was fresh out of high school and went in the spring game and played well.

I hope the prior coaching staff spent some time working with him.  I can see the prior staff only concerning themselves with the right now and focusing only on Braxton and Earle.  In 4 years they didn't develop a single QB.  Instead, they relied on the transfer portal and what other coaches developed.

Interesting article about the Qb?s available!

Tony Baby why not make offer?s to see if some of them would be interested as we are going to be building for that playoff spot 2025-2026 season to see who is seriously ready to go for it! Couldn?t hurt! Marshall?s got the name and rep for being a up and coming winner again putting people into the league!
Maybe I'm missing something, but what's "interesting" about the quarterbacks available? It's been this way, nothing has changed.

  • There is no question the better the player(s), the easier it is for a coach. But if your program relies on NFL caliber QBs to succeed than you're going to see a dropoff when you don't have one. Donnan did outstanding job making his QBs all-conf caliber. Bottom line is we will likely never out recruit our peers like we did early in MAC. So when you have basically same recruiting pool as rest of league your X and O will often decide who wins those games...and I think Doege proved that this season. That is not to say Huff didn't upgrade the talent, he certainly did, but look at just the ODU, JMU games and it's easy to see Doege had a big hand in those results.

Government is the most dangerous institution known to man. • The sad thing is now when our players succeed they will be poached to another school at the end of the season - we are now just a feeder school for the bigs  basically the minors     We can't root for our players to blow it off the charts honestly because they will leave ala Turner, Yates

Donnan? He recruited Pennington but left after his freshman year. Kresser, Pennington, Leftwich, and Hill were all Pruett.

Donnan had his son, who ended up really good in spite of some physical limitations.  He also had Michael Payton for whom an argument could be made that he is the 2nd best QB in Marshall history.

Nice.  I know their kicker was from GW, #99.  Not sure what class he's in.  Not aware of any others, but we need bodies!!

i've fully accepted the stark reality of the constant revolving door.  i understand some fans wanting to be fully connected but i don't care about that anymore- right or wrong, i care only about championships at the highest level possible.  it looks like the vast majority of schools at all levels are now a feeder school to someone else and it works both/all ways.

that's why i'm stumped about TG getting a 6 year contract.  why Huff for 4?  what will be the next coach's contract term?  unless someone has guaranteed to put up buyout money, 6 is worrisome.  if money is not there, now or in the future, i'm more comfortable with 3 even if coaches aren't!

i had thought the contract terms in general for CFB coaches might be on the decrease, much like players coming and going constantly.  HCs have to be immediate impact players, and ADs have to be on top of their game as well.  ADs and Presidents give lip service to academics first this and that when we know well that athletics help support that mission whether indirectly or directly

6 was a trade off for Gibson to take a large pay cut.  "You can't pay me $1.5mil for 4?  I'll take $1mil for 6"

No thanks. I watched enough of their games to know that number one, he doesn?t fit our new style, and number two, he isn?t that good.

What style are we running? The OC may have to adapt to what he can get. Square plug, round hole doesn't work. Cramsey proved that. The kid may need a new life, ala Braxton

yeah, i did assume that possibility or that he and his family do still have strong family and friends ties to the state and/or that he truly wants to retire from football here whether it's his 1st, 2nd or whichever home

You don't hire the guy who's been running the Rich Rod offense his entire career to not run the Rich Rod offense. Their QB had 1,344 rushing yards this year. Aguilar isn't that type of QB

I think the higher-ups recognize what a sh!t show Huff left.  He may need a couple years just to get caught back up to what might be a "normal" situation a new HC would step into.  Granted, things can turn around in a year with the portal, but at least one additional year makes sense.

  • Not even to mention Michael Payton, God rest his soul, but Todd Donnan was one steady QB.  If we would have had his equal, Huffy wouldn't have been in the controversy at the position like he was for all four years.  Personally, I don't see a great loss in BB.

I think it?s pretty obvious we will be running the RR type of offense. No other reason to hire Rod Smith.

With the portal era, we don?t have to adjust offense to fit what we have. He has 3 QB scholarships to hit the portal and find someone who can run HIS offense.

You know we had QBs before Pennington, right?  QBs that were all-conference in the SoCon and played for several times and won a national title?  Nothing in his statement was inaccurate.

In 1992, Michael Payton completed 268 passes on 415 attempts for 3,610 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.[10] He was awarded the Walter Payton Award for that year and was a consensus first-team All-American.[11][9][12] Payton again led Marshall to the I-AA title contest,[13] where they defeated Youngstown State in the 1992 NCAA Division I-AA Football Championship Game, giving Marshall their first I-AA title.[14] He was again named Southern Conference Player of the Year, West Virginia Athlete of the Year and Man of the Year.[9] Payton finished his college tenure as the Southern Conference's all-time career passing leader, and received the Walter Payton Award, which is given annually to the best player in Division I-AA football.[15] Payton is Marshall's fourth highest ever passer with 9.411 career yards-gained (exceeding the previous record by more than 2,300 yards) and their fifth highest all-time scorer with 69 career touchdowns.

So you don't think BB will be a great loss? Well, he was voted the Newcomer of the Year in the SBC and Marshall is rumored to have offer him a six figure NIL (the largest NIL deal in Marshall history) deal to stay at Marshall. Just sayin.
