  • There is no rebuilding mode anymore. Huff brought in 40+ players last year and won a title. Gibson should be able to do the same.

Huff took 4 years to win the East division and then the conference.  He did recruit the portal heavily and had massive roster turnover each season.

USM will be improved because you can't go any lower.  I am expecting a 7-5 type season for MU next year as we have all road games in our division and we open up against Georgia.

I have moved on as Huff had some horrendous losses and a couple of amazing wins.  He was an average coach that did not want to be at MU.  There are 2 sides to what happened but Huff broke his signed contract and it pushed Smith to move on.

  • It just seems like what is leaving is better than what is coming. At least so far anyway. With Huff taking all those starters and how we know he can work the portal. If he recruits the portal in the spring like he did here then he is going to make them a contender in his first year when you add a good portal haul in the spring on top of taking our starters that win the conference.

Other than the Marshall guys that Huff took with him he hasn't really landed any big fish in the portal so far either.

There is lots of time left for Gibson to recruit and land some difference-makers in the portal.

Yes from my understanding.  I could be wrong but he signed a contract that he would not consider other jobs until MU was finished.  He accepted the USM job prior to us playing at JMU.

  • It seems to me that successful seasons at our level depended heavily on one thing. Do you have a good QB?

  • I'd not want to fight either side on this "Broke" his contract in a court of law, particularly with a jury; just saying....

Huff got us to where we had only been once in over 20 years. I'm just not seeing good talent brought in so far. Hopefully that changes in the spring. Huff was a very good recruiter for a zg5 program. Actually did an amazing job.

The difference is some of the guys Huff took with him are transfers from big time P4 schools. Moten was an A&M kid and a top 5 portal CB this year. Huff had kids at Marshall from several big schools including Miami, TCU, Colorado, Baylor, Ole Miss, Florida State, Florida etc...

So far Marshall has NC State transfers or G5 or lower level kids, and I think one from Maryland. All of this is fine and may work out better than I expect, but let's be honest, getting a transfer from one of the schools listed above excites fans more than a transfer from University of Charleston or East Texas A&M

  • & here's to hoping he can make it look the slightest bit legit & beat the patsies we play the 2 games after

Oh it was legit. We didn't get lucky or get 10 turnovers. We lined up and beat them. And win the conference this year. When was the last time we did that? Once in last 20+ years. Let's hope Gibson is good but some of you always think the next coach is the man. His recruiting isn't showing me anything yet but hopefully that will change.

Yes.  But it's a lot easier for Huff to recruit a bunch if guys all at once that he was already coaching to follow him to Southern Miss than it is for Gibson who is a first time head coach to convince guys he's never cosched to come to Marshall.

What Gibson is trying to do in the portal will take several weeks if not months, while Huff just said "follow me." So he got a lot of guys all at once. My point is, can't really judge how Gibson did in the portal until Summer gets here.

Gibson has gotten P4 guys. Maryland, Colorado, Miss St, Wvu, nc state.  With over 45 spots still available I would imagine we will see more.

It wasn't a contract he broke. The two sides couldn't come to an agreement before the season began and both sides had a gentleman's agreement that both sides would focus on the season and pick up negation again once the season began. In the meantime Huff would agree not to take any additional interviews & Marshall wouldn't pursue any other coaches. Huff broke that agreement by visiting Southern Miss & Marshall felt that was the last straw.

  • I don't know if this has been posted (apologies if it has) but the website Football Scoop has these tidbits: Marshall: Sources tell Football Scoop Tony Gibson's staff continues to come together with the additions of Theron Aych as receivers coach, Jake Ellsworth as linebackers coach and Dwight Galt as head strength coach.

  • Name drawn out of the 🎩 .... 1st pick .... Tony Gibson ..... SCRIPTED
All total BS .... wants to be home theme

I?d imagine the players / coaches know this and that?s why most rolled to S.Miss

Didn?t somebody say none of our best players would follow Huff to S.Miss????

    They all did except Yates

This was so easy to see happening even Stevie Wonder saw it

You need to recheck the portal if you think Yates was the only one.  Moten was the only one that didn?t go P5 that had a real shot and he waited till those possibilities played out before going USM.
