I don't like to lose, and that isn't so much because it is just a football game, but because defeat means the failure to reach your objective. I don't want a football player who doesn't take defeat to heart, who laughs it off with the thought, 'Oh, well, there's another Saturday.' The trouble in American life today, in business as well as in sports, is that too many people are afraid of competition. The result is that in some circles people have come to sneer at success if it costs hard work and training and sacrifice.- Knute Rockne

Solid pickup.  Wonder if this is why Cole didn't end up at GW?  Family's are close so GW seemed natural and looked like it was a done deal and then SD kind of came out of nowhere.

  • FYI: The below is his bio from the GW web site.

2022 at Gardner-Webb: Did not see action as he redshirted the season.

High School: Played at Spring Valley (WVa.) High under Coach Brad Dingess ? A preseason Class 3A All-State selection at center in 2021 ? Missed senior season with an injury ? Helped Wolves to state championship game appearances in 2018 and 2019 ? Bench presses 370 pounds, squats 550 pounds and power cleans 300 pounds ? Father, Aaron Ferguson, was a four-time All-SoCon choice at Marshall and helped the Thundering Herd to the 1996 NCAA Division I-AA title ? The elder Ferguson also won the SoCon?s Jacobs Blocking Trophy in 1996 and was a consensus I-AA All-America selection. YI:

It is hard to find data on OL. Did Ferguson play this year at GW? FWIW: He is not listed on the Big South-OVC first and second all conference teams.

Their site is odd (some things are up to date and other sections are not) and somewhat more challenging to navigate (even compared to HerdZone)

But in 2024 he participated in 11 games (doesn't say if he started or not) and in 2023 participated in 2 games.

  • as was the case with many past incoming transfers, their history is murky.  2nd or more chances with some good and some not so good results.  i hope he's gotten past whatever's been keeping him from playing every game every year since his pre-senior HS injury.  i'm pretty sure centers have to be sharp so i hope he's got some smarts (if he was recruited to specifically play center)
