  • Tash, Billingy tops in volleyball

NOLAN TASH and Kelly-Anne Billingy have been chosen by the Trinidad and Tobago Volleyball Federation as their players of 2004.

The attackers will be vying for sportsman and sportswoman of the year but the date and venue for the annual sports awards ceremony -being sponsored by First Citizens Bank for the very first time-have not yet been finalised. The function is usually held in February.

The 18-year-old Billingy, who has been the top female striker in the Caribbean for the last two years, was named top spiker when Trinidad and Tobago's women finished third in last year's Caribbean Championships in Barbados.

Billingy, who had also captured the award in the previous tournament (2002) and in the last two editions of the Caribbean Junior Championships-won by T&T-has been breaking records since starting school in the United States in September.

The student of Marshall University in West Virginia set countless new marks at her school and was voted the Mideast Region Freshman of the Year.

Tash led the T&T male team to a best-ever third-place finish in last year's Caribbean Championships and was the leading male scorer of the tournament. The man, who had been the leading spiker in the 2002 competition in Trinidad, also combined with half-brother Gideon Dickson to win the local leg of the Stag Spike Down Beach Volleyball tournament in August.
