MEMPHIS - It was the same old story for the Marshall Thundering Herd Tuesday night inside the Liberty Bowl.

Second half mishaps extinguished any fire the Herd had going when attempting to make a late fourth quarter rally in its first Conference USA game of the season, and the Memphis Tigers (2-3, 1-1 C-USA) took home a 24-21 victory for their fallen teammate Taylor Bradford, who was murdered Sunday night near the University of Memphis campus.

"Turnover margin, that's the key," head coach Mark Snyder said. "How many did we have? Two or three? And they had none. That's the difference in the game."

Trailing by what would be the final margin of 24-21, the Herd (0-5, 0-1 C-USA) attempted a comeback with just over two minutes left in the game. Marshall was moving into field goal range for a possible game-tying kick when senior quarterback Bernard Morris could not handle a low snap from center Doug Legursky.

The Herd lost 19 yards on the mistake and was not able to get the first down as the Tigers took over on downs. A third quarter fumble by freshman Darius Marshall and a fumble by field-goal holder Emmanuel Spann in the fourth quarter also slowed any Herd attempts for a win.

Morris threw for 220 yards on 20-of-32 passing with two touchdowns and one interception.

Memphis quarterback Will Hudgens received the start with regular signal caller Martin Hankins sidelined with a hip injury. He did not disappoint, throwing for 346 yards and two touchdowns, both career highs. Six-foot-8 receiver Carlos Singleton had 69 yards receiving on five catches with a score.

  • Uh, I think we made a lot of mistakes and had the INT in the first half.

    Go Herd!
