  • I hope that West Virginia and Marshall play in football soon. I suggest that Mountaineers should clear schedule of Villanova, Buffalo, ECU and Ball State and see if some type of contract can be signed.

Just to note when I served on the WVU Athletic Council (a hundred years ago) I made a motion that WVU and Marshall basketball teams should play. That motion died for the lack of a second.

I know some Marshall don't want to ever play WVU and I'm aware that some of my Mountaineer fans will not ever consider scheduling the Herd. But I hope it can be worked out.

Just a thought from a Mountaineer.
Always a Mountaineer, but can see benefit of playing Marshall.

Your definately different than most of the other wvuites that post here.  Most just spout the Hardesty company line verbatim.  Anyway, anyone with a lick of sense knows that both programs can gain a lot by having the other on its schedule.   I honestly have never seen such BS when it comes to trying to schedule a football game.

  • I agree about the b.s. part. But in all honestly, I'd like to know where the great benefit to WVU is in all this? I'm talking to the extent of WVU giving marshall what they want. Seriously, I'd like to know. It's not for recruiting grounds, it's not for any great TV contract. Where's all the benefit for WVU?

  • Pittsburgh, could have had the same attitude, and used the same reasoning many years ago, and where would that have left WVU? WVU, still to this day uses the greater Pittsburgh Metro area when they show their TV drawing power. None of this would have ever been possible for WVU, if it had not been for Pittsburgh.

Now, you can deny this etc., but it does not take away from the historical fact of this having happened, and the impact that it allowed WVU to have in inter-collegiate athletics is still inestimable to this very day.

    GO THUNDERINGHERD!

Just who out there is going to help you have at least one sellout every other year and would also help you sale tickets to UConn, Rutgers and Cincy?  You cant get a one for one with any programs other than Marshall that would help you do that.  You also say it wouldnt attract TV, well I say your wrong.  Every game we've played against BCS teams has been on some sort of TV.  Whether its been ABC regional, ESPN at noon or ESPN regional...they've all been on TV.  So there is nothing that would make me a think a game with you guys wouldnt draw TV interest from somebody.  I guarentee you a wvv vs. Marshall matchup would have every bit the national interest as a UK/UoL game...and that one is slated every year on Sunday for ESPN.

Another thing, you and your croonies mentioned wvu cant afford what Marshall wants.  Do you have any insider info that explains just what Marshall wants?  If so I'd like to hear it.

  • While I'd like to see the game played, I agree the upside for WVU is far less than the upside for MU.  However, being good stewards to the state WVU should find a way to make the game happen.

As to who would help sellouts?  Well, VPI, PSU, or any other high-profile BCS team as well as a whole host of other schools.  MU is not the only one to guarantee ticket sales.  I concede that other than VPI (and even that one has a cloudy future) those other teams aren't exactly knocking down the door to schedule (and it has nothing to do with the civil war either).  However, WVU should not assume that MU is the only sure-ticket seller out there.

All things being said the 12th game should be VPI.  More intense rival, better tradition, stronger SOS impact, sellouts, etc.  If MU could be squeezed into the ECU slot or something similar that would be good.

One other thing, most deals are agreed to in principle verbally before a contract is floated for signatures.  Executing the contract is a matter of formality.  In my business (healthcare) we do just that.  Not sure what business all these herd fans are in where breaking verbal agreements are okay, but I'm curious.

  • Z, I think WVU should schedule VT. At least 3 of the posters here are either involved in law, or accounting. We are a nation of laws, and if you don't have it in writing you are in trouble my friend. This would be my suggestion to you, for your future. I, in no way mean that in anyway, but as a friend.

    Carolina,

ps. I don't know what it is with VT, but MU would rather schedlue VT, instead of WVU, as well. That is just the truth, but in no way is meant as a slur to you, or WVU.

When Moon presented the "agreement deal" to Gilley for approval he nixed it because he insisted at least one game be on our field.  You guys didnt want to make the trip to Huntington so talks were suspended.  Your AD dropped the ball by assuming such a stupid agreement would fly in Huntington.

Another thing, Hardesty and Pastilong claim they lost money for asking out of games with UoL to play MU.  We now know that wasnt true at all since its been reported UoL requested out of the games with you and not the other way around.  That first game was the only one that was contracted to play everything else being said is just BS excuses from a bumbling athletic administration.

If you people werent all like sheep and had the ability to think for yourselves you would see that.  Hardesty and Pastilong arent very capable individuals.  To total screwup deals with MU and Dakich and then waste 1.2 million on the ACC thing should be enough to wake your fans up.  Sadly that wont happen because you are earfans.

  • Well technically a contract doesn't have to be in writing to be binding, but I'm not going to get into a tit-for-tat regarding contract law on a smack board.

So wolf you're saying that Hardesty and Pastilong aren't very capable individuals?  Really, well let's see, they preside over an athletic program that  is pretty successful (new years bowls, final 8 basketball team, national championship in wrestling and so on) all on one of lowest budgets among BCS universities.  Oh, by the way, it is a BCS school.  How did they screw up the dakich deal?  Obviously, the man had a change of heart.  Do you really think they would have made him stay even had the contract been signed?   As for the ACC lawsuit, what if the remaining Big East schools just rolled over an accepted the raid.  Do you not think that maybe the fact that they were willing to fight factored into the BCS equation?  Maybe,  maybe not.  Even so, a home and home with FSU is worth 1.2 million in my estimation.

But since you brought up capable individuals, how about yours.  Yours had Lance West as an AD, now that's a capable individual.  Yours couldn't get you into the Big East.  I mean South Florida is in and you're not (here comes the chorus that "but WVU blocked us").  Yours hired Ron Jirsa over the NBA coach of the year.  Yours had your highly successful and popular football coach suprise retire in the Spring.  Name the last coach that retired right before spring practice.  And of course, we can't forget, yours presided over a practice of handing checks for bogus work out of the football office for upteen years and then when you were told that is wrong, yours promoted the guy whose job it was to know that was wrong in the first place.

Yeah, and Hardesty and Pastilong aren't very capable.  Sure they aren't perfect and have made some mistakes, but they look like nobel prize winning rocket scientists compared to yours.

  • The former has now pasted. The truth's will be frivalous. This is a new day, and we care about West Virginia, and WVU. However, we, by the Grace of Almighty God, are Sons, and Daughters of Marshall. We, collectively are very proud of this fact, and have a real pride, and love for her, that is no different than what other people feel for their fine institutions. We, as I have stated before have chosen to try, and take the higher road, and certainly do not want to continue obstruction, or confrontation. It is my hope that we might move foward in a spirt of conciliation. That is not to say, we cannot have verbal banter, or a jab here, and there, but for the most part, we both can grow some, and become a little more civil, so that when posters from Mississippi, Alabama, New Jersey, Conn. West Virginia, The Carolina's, Tennessee, Texas, Penna., Florida, Kentucky, Ohio, Oklahoma, New York, Rhode Island, and anyone else from another state,
who may come on our boards, may find a certain level of decency, and civility. How anyone else runs their boards is their business, but we have chosen to try an take a higher road.

Best Wishes to all, and may the games begin,

    Carolina
