"Frustrating" was repeated over and again from all involved with Marshall University football Tuesday night.

After yet another uneven road start, the Thundering Herd found its legs and appeared steered toward victory. The University of Memphis was without its starting quarterback, minus several defensive regulars and reeling from a loss that transcended the game.

Spurred by a pregame talk from the Taylor Bradford family, Memphis righted itself prior to an unprecedented kickoff. The Tigers had lost Bradford, a junior defensive lineman, to a Sunday night shooting death, leading to a questionable call to play the game.

University officials did right by the Bradfords. A moment of silence preceded kickoff, and the Tigers band bellowed "Amazing Grace" in Bradford's honor at halftime.

Once Tuesday night reduced to the game, everything pointed toward an absolute-must Thundering Herd victory. This team bought into the proper mindset that regardless of an 0-4 start, the season started Oct. 2 with Conference USA play.
