HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss defensive coordinator Jay Hopson returned to practice Tuesday after undergoing treatment for what was believed to be testicular cancer.

Hopson will coach the Golden Eagles from the box Sunday against Marshall. Hopson was part of the Marshall coaching staff from 1996 to 2000.

Southern Miss coach Jeff Bower said Monday he did not expect Hopson to return this week, but the coach showed up Tuesday morning.

"It is good to have him back," Bower said. "He came in this morning after his doctor's appointment."

Hopson had a cancerous testicle removed in 1995. He had surgery last week at the Indiana University Cancer Center after doctors found growths on the remaining testicle.
