HUNTINGTON -- Prior to Marshall University's most recent home football game, players and coaches reached out to fans.

The call was for a large, enthused crowd in the face of an 0-2 start. NCAA Division I-AA power New Hampshire was the opponent -- not exactly an enticing draw -- but the Tri-State responded with a total attendance of 27,255. That was more than a month ago, leaving Tri-State football fans in tailgating withdrawal. Joan C. Edwards Stadium again is open for business Sunday afternoon leading to the Thundering Herd's clash with Southern Miss.

Echoing last month's call, players and coaches are asking for a decided home stadium edge. This request carries a bit more ownership, however; yes, an energized prime time atmosphere will help, but players and coaches need to deliver, as well.

Such is the message leading into uncharted territory, a Sunday night home game. Marshall (0-6, 0-2 Conference USA) and Southern Miss (3-3, 2-1) kick off at 8 p.m. ESPN will televise the game.

"We do need a big crowd," Thundering Herd head coach Mark Snyder said. "These kids need our support. We have a chance to put our university on national television in front of millions of people on ESPN.

  • I love how the head coach is continually calling for a "huge crowd"....
In a way, he is diverting his responsibility to get the job done on the field.
Start producing wins on the field, Coach Snyder, quit making ridiculous head coaching decisions, and the fans will flock to the stadium.  It is pretty bad state of affairs when you have to plead for fans to come to the game.  You had quite a nice turnout for the UNH game.  Nice game plan for that one.  Home crowd was real glad to come out and support the team, yet had to leave embarrassed because we could barely compete w/ a mid of the road 1-AA team.
