EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Marshall University saw a 16-point second half lead disappear Friday night and lost to Evansville, 89-77, in a Preseason WNIT women's basketball game.

It was the season opener for both clubs.

Marshall had a 62-46 lead with about 16 minutes remaining. Marshall still had a 70-57 edge with about 10 minutes left. Evansville used a 26-0 scoring run to overtake the Thundering Herd and roll to the victory at Roberts Stadium before a crowd of 1,057.

All five Purple Aces starters scored in double figures, led by Rebekah Parker with 22 and Shannon Novosel with 20. Novosel also grabbed 12 rebounds.

Alix Barnette led Marshall with 15 points. Meg Withrow had 13 points, six assists and five steals.

Marshall shot 60 percent from the field while building a 51-39 halftime advantage. Herd shooters cooled to 31 percent in the second half and 46.9 percent in the game.

Evansville, which shot 50 percent for the game, also controlled the rebounds by a 40 to 30 edge.

Giving up 26 unanswered points going into the final stretch of the game is not what you want to do. I do think Royce will rebound from this and have the Lady Herd ready for conference play.

  • I had a big long post ready to submit concerning this game.....but deleted it.
I was at the game with the bus-full of MU fans that saw this game.

    We DID play well.
    It was a championship atmosphere.
EU is a good veteran team.
We WERE in control of this game.

    And....

    The whistle changed it.
Retired 10 years early to follow Herd sports.
Those 10 years have been marvelous.
