  • Smith got a Thunder Club bonus last year?????

With their track record, NO ONE on the football staff deserves a Thunder Club bonus.

  • First of all I did not miss any point.  I see where you are coming from about the negativity, which if you check my history I have supported MS, MU  and the staff.

Maybe I misunderstood you, but you were meaning that us being negative will have an effect on coaches that are going to be hired.

You must not know that much about being in the coaching business or are just blinded by something.  I dont need any congratulations about my football wisdom, it seems like you are the one that needs the attention.

The program is where it is right now.  We will get what we pay for, nothing in college football is guaranteed.  So get off of your high horse.

  • I think the problem Snyder may be having right now is he knows there needs to be a change at the DB coaching position but yet values Nichols recruiting abilities. He may just be trying to find a way to switch him around somewhere in order to keep him yet find someone to coach the DB's. Just a guess? ???

  • I am just stunned that the DB Coach (Nichols) didn't make the first cut list.  Of all the groups on the squad, the DBs and Safeties showed the LEAST development.  I understand he is purportedly valued on recruiting, but winning games comes from coaching players you have on the roster.
I don't like to lose, and that isn't so much because it is just a football game, but because defeat means the failure to reach your objective. I don't want a football player who doesn't take defeat to heart, who laughs it off with the thought, 'Oh, well, there's another Saturday.' The trouble in American life today, in business as well as in sports, is that too many people are afraid of competition. The result is that in some circles people have come to sneer at success if it costs hard work and training and sacrifice.- Knute Rockne

or you let him stay on staff and recruit through signing day and then part ways with him.

That is not fair or ethical to him or the signees.

  • Well as an example: MU releases their BB committments last year, because of a coaching change. Many other U's." never did. This is just one of many examples of how above board MU has always dealt with young men and women coming to our University on scholarship.

    ? so?

it's part of the business that guys get fired after signing day, it's part of the business to let kids out of scholarship when you fire the head coach.

  • In regards to Coach Nichols....

Maybe a prominent Marshall supporter has a need for help in the
circulation department of a local newspaper <g>.

Getting new subscribers would be somewhat like bringing in new
recruits... and it's not like the paper would be paying him a salary
    for nothing <g>.

Then we bring in a former son of Marshall that might have played
a down or two as a defensive back in his life... Like maybe a former
coach at WV State possibly ?????

  •  I think Smith was our "in" at Ga Military. that might sting a bit.  Hope it doesn't impact Footman.

Carl Lee joining the staff as a DB coach would be a unbelievable get.  Is that a possible scenario Postal?

  • The new OC is still playing football....I have not heard on any replacement for DL. I did hear that Dunlap may do it himself to free up funds for a really good OC although  :o

  • Our secondary is pretty much garbage. They can't tackle well consistently and alot of them really have no idea how to cover. It is like literally watching a bunch of high school kids play out there. Plus most of them are interchangeable for the most part. I don't think any amount of recruiting ability can make up for that.

The only thing I can hope for, is that Snyder fires more assistants once signing day is over. Perhaps his new OC and Dunlap have some friends they want to bring in. Either which way, I hope he has some replacements for his other assitant coaches once a full recruiting class is signed.

To me the other way to look at it with Nichols is that he's a young guys, still not very experienced and highly valued for his recruiting abilities.  You now have Steve Dunlap in place to help mentor him and in the meantime you aren't paying out the nose for a DB coach.

I know this is a pipe dream, since he is the Co-Offensive Coordinator at Purdue.  Figured I'd throw the name out there.  I am guessing the only way he would come back is if the HC job was open.

I think that'd be correct. He is a hell of a coach too, it was a shame we lost him. Purdue is like Marshall west though, they have Legg, Ed Z, Anarumo, and Joe Diefel.

  • Some decent OC candidates that we might not typically think we could get (Parrish, Legg, Peterson, etc.) might take a look at the situation and think they could be one or two years away from being elevated into a HC job here.
