Marshall may have landed its biggest catch of the football recruiting season as rivals.com has reported the commitment of wide receiver O.J. Murdock.

Murdock was a four-star receiver when he signed with South Carolina, but ran into trouble with a 2006 shoplifting charge near his hometown of Tampa, Fla. The Hillsborough County sheriff’s department accused him of stealing about $400 worth a merchandise from a Macy’s department store, with a girlfriend pretending to ring the items up.

He was initially charged with third-degree grand theft, a felony in Florida that involves $300 or more in merchandise. The case was closed Dec. 18, 2007, according to the Hillsborough County clerk’s Web site, for pre-trial intervention. Murdock paid $112 in assessments, the records show.

He was once reported to be transferring to South Florida, but opted to resurrect his career at Pearl River Community College in Mississippi. He reportedly will be a February signee, report in the summer and will have two years to finish his eligibility.

Murdock is listed at 6-feet and 185 to 190 pounds and his speed is reported, depending on who you consult, at 4.4 or 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash. He played in just three games for Pearl River in 2007, catching six passes for 60 yards.

  • I appreciate the talent, but there is a small red flag next to this young man.
He'll need to grow up, and maybe getting away from home will accomplish that.
Kudos to Snyder for picking up a good talent, now let's hope he is a good student and member of the community as well.

  • gotta love the gagette.......

no mention of rivals list of other big time offers....they focus on his problems from 2 years ago....funny, never heard much about the criminals that ramrod smuggled into wvu the last few years.

buff, you need to be worried about that sewer of a school up north, not a problem one MU kid had two years ago.

  • The kid's problem is old news. There has been nothing coming out of his JUCO years that indicate trouble. Maybe its some of us that need to grow up!

  • I assume he was hurt all those other games last year?  Is there any box score or article anywhere talking about his absence from the field?

  • Snyder is again landing great talent on paper. Lets see if he can transform that into some wins this year. I don't think he has any excuses this year. The talent is there.

  • The kid has played in 3 games at the community college level and caught 6 passes for 60 yards.  Not exactly great talent.

he also was the 10th best prospect at receiver in the nation out of high school, one of the top 100 players out of high school.

He had offers, as a JUCO, from LSU, Tennessee, Florida State and Louisville.

  • You couldn't be more wrong, HerdEcon.

I saw Murdock several times when he played for Middleton High in Tampa. He was a man among boys -- even when he played vs. the Florida state champs Armwood High Hawks.

Murdock is the fastest and the most-talented WR to come out the Tampa Bay region since Darryl Jackson (Tampa Catholic High,  Seattle Seahawks).

  • According to Landon:

Snyder disputed published reports that junior college wide receiver O.J. Murdock has given Marshall a verbal commitment. The Herd definitely is recruiting the standout prospect, however. In fact, Snyder plans to visit Murdock personally this week. But he hasn't given Marshall a commitment yet.

Interesting quote, considering Mark isn't allowed to talk about specific recruits.   ::)
