Though Mother Nature is trying her best to trick us, my trusty calendar confirms that we are indeed in the heart of summer.

In the sports world, that means it's time for America's favorite pastime.

No, I'm not talking about baseball.

This is football season.

Signs of the season are all around with professional teams grinding through training camps while collegiate and high school programs are putting down the weights and picking up the pads for on-field workouts.

Marshall's football team returned to campus this week, essentially teeing up the ball for the season's kickoff in September. They will take the field for their first practice Friday.

The coming weeks, will feature the excitement of position battles, cuts and all other items that contribute to the buildup of the regular season. It is in these weeks, they say, that the games of the regular season are won and lost.

Once the regular season arrives, the excitement kicks into a whole new gear and progressively increases as the season wears on.
