The original contract was worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $320,000. That included a $220,000 annual salary; $80,000 for television and radio; $10,000 for speaking appearances and a percentage of season-ticket sales.

There also are numerous incentive clauses that would push the worth of the overall contract even higher.

    It included a $500,000 buyout.

The new pact isn't significantly different, according to sources. Jones apparently received a minimal raise. The amount of the new buyout clause is unknown.

  • I recall that buyout figure being in the original contract. I'm not sure if the buyout amount has changed in the extension. But in the original contract, if DJ left for another school during the five-year limit, then he would have to pay Marshall $500, 000.

  • is that saying the 500k buyout was a part of the orginal contract?  i've always heard buyouts decreased as coaches progressed thorugh their contract.  i like to know for sure because if we get 500k that changes everything in my opinion.

  • He just signed the contract two months ago, but I read the article wrong.  They haven't  publically released his new buyout amount.
But, I really believe Hamrick is very smart and he probably anchored him down.

The amount of the new buyout clause is unknown.   Again, security was the biggest issue.  Jones wanted to rest assured he would be able to build Marshall's program his way. This new contract ensures that.  And let's be honest. This is a great deal for everybody. ... Jones, Hamrick, Marshall and Herd fans.  The man we call "D.J." is a perfect fit for Marshall, the Tri-State and the Herd universe. He is classy, personable and wholesome to the Nth degree.

That's why sources say Hamrick and Jones both were delighted with the new contract.

  • It says the old buyout was 500K but the new buyout was unknown, could be the same or more. The article says the reason for the extension was for long term job security so that tends to tell me it probably was increased.

If buyouts do decrease as the coach progresses through his contract then this extension reset Jones time from 2 to 4 years remaining.

    If he does leave...

We're coming off a 25 win season and a CIT appearance.

The conference as a whole placed half of it's teams in the post-season.

We just completed a multi-million dollar locker room renovation.

More Henderson Center upgrades are planned for this summer.

The position will be much more attractive to prospective new coaches than it was before we hired DJ. I would say thank you Coach Jones for a job well done and congratulations, I hope we beat you by 30 points every time we play you.

  • Well , if Hamrick is supposedly all about making MU money , maybe he will encourage him to leave , I mean , 500K is 500K . ;)

  • Stupid career move IMO, If you leave go to the big time or go to a school that dominates it's league and pays well.  Starting over at UCF, in our league, is a big career gamble.

Fail at UCF, and then where will you be?   Back as a assitant coach somewhere making 150k with a rep as a guy that can't build a program...

  • MUTeke I couldnt agree more with what you posted.  Johnny I also agree with you.  If you are going to leave you leave for an obviously better situation.  Going to UCF doesnt fullfill that role.

The  UCF people would dispute that... and there is some truth to it.

  • Umm , maybe DJ has been told something we haven't . Could be DJ now knows a move to the Big East, or other conf., is in store for UCF . If this is the case , great career move for him . I can't see DJ leaving for a job similar to the one he has now , plus being in the same conf.

That is the very same thing that I have been wondering. If an invite is sent out from the big east, ucf would get one before Marshall. FroM what I heard, ucf almost got a football only invite the last go around.

Well hell! No sense competing in CUSA we should just drop back to 1aa. To many people are quick to say somewhere else is better than MU and Huntington.

  • I just dont think UCF is a very attractive job. It seems to me Florida isnt the place to try and build a basketball program.  You have USF, FSU, Miami who really hasnt done anything significant on the basketball court on a consistant basis.  And no one can question they each have more resources than UCF.  But if they hire DJ best of luck to him...and thanks for the 500k.  We obviously need it more than UCF.   :-\

  • Everyone touts the state of Florida as some hotbed of basketball talent and thats just not the case.  Im not saying there isnt talent down there because there is but its not like in football where you throw a rock and hit 10 athletes.

  • From the Sentinel:

    * Donnie Jones, Marshall

Buzz: It would cause huge waves in Conference USA if the Knights managed to lure away a division rival's head coach. If Jones were still an assistant at Florida, he would be an obvious choice for the job. He is a strong recruiter and rumored to be considering the Knights because the program has more resources and room for future growth.

I dont know how you can say that with such certainty.  The guy is rumored to be there today interviewing and that leads me to believe anything could happen.

I've always been a realist when it comes to coaches coming and going here.  I don't care what anyone on here says, Marshall is a stepping stone program in ALL sports....BUT, to lose a coach to an in conference rival leads me to believe there may be some problems.  Maybe UCF is going to get the BCS call and we aren't.  The "buzz" quote above about more resources and more room to grow...OUCH.  I don't care if it did come from a Fla paper...it's probably true and VERY difficult to read!!!

I 100% believe that there are some very, very bad days ahead for MU athletics if UCF is able to poach one of our HEAD COACHES.

  • You may be right.  And remember we have a poster (Greenbison60 ) who claims to be a "diehard" since the 70's that doesnt believe donating to our programs is needed.  Yep, we could be in big trouble.

He seems obsessed with the Herd since he will post on the Smack after being banned twice but doesn't want to provide any booster support. Don't get it.

My point is that I think that as a BASKETBALL program almost everybody in the league would say that MU is in the better position...for DJ to be even considering it is scary.  You know that he hears the inside dirt...why in the hell would he even go interview?

Doesn't make sense unless he knows something that instantly makes UCF attractive (ie Big LEast invite or ACC invite) or something that make MU less attractive (no invites in our future).

Does that not make sense to see it that way?
