  • I think bigwormy nailed the reason why Jones left The Herd. Your thoughts about the below well reasoned post?

being realistic, if we can get 500,000 grand, i say see ya donnie. i wont disagree the program has improved, but to what point. we still would not have a post season tourney if it wasnt for the ignorant tourneys they made up the last couple years. the schedule was dumbed down waaayy to much this year. this team might not win 20 games with a decent schedule. the thing i believe is donnie may have peaked this year at marshall. face it folks, if HW leaves, we might not be very good next year depending on whos coming in and eligible to play. i believe donnie may know this hence getn a 300,000 grand raise and rebuilding at ucf is better than doing it again at marshall. if he falters at marshall, an oppurtunity may not fall his way again for sometime. by going to ucf, he buys himself 3-4 more years and over a million more dollars. what does it mean for marshall? it means we will get another up and coming coach who may and should take us farther than donnie has and maybe will.

  • i really believe this is the most logical explanation of him leaving.

  • This may very well indeed indicate that Whiteside has told Jones he is leaving. that could have been the determining factor for Jones.

  • Based on Landons article this morning, thats excatly the reason he left. He took the money and ran, knowing full well there would be very little chance we would duplictae this years record - next year. Too much was lost in Tyler, Whineside, et al. Kane will not be eligible for next year - so there goes the true scorer we needed. He knew his stock would drop after next year. If we only win 2 games next year - I hope we beat the hell out of UCF. Jerk! I am very disappointed.

  • I'm not going to bash DJ since I was behind him the entire time.  Two years ago, I sat in my seat at the Cam with very, VERY few people.  This year I saw a lot of half full + houses.  He brought people back to MU basketball and that is a good thing.

With that said, I started to question his ability to motivate and prepare his team.  I'm not going to go to the ucf game to boo.  I'm not going to wish ill will on him.  But at the same time, I don't think that I'm going to lose any sleep over him being gone.

    Time to move on AGAIN!

    Go Herd.

  • The 2nd half of the Tulsa tourney game looked like he was ready to leave town in a hurry.

Then came the CIT and we couldn't even win the Southern Conf. "championship."  I think the players reacted to their coach's attitude rather than playing their hearts out as they have in the past.

  • Will agree with the idea it had to do with "peaking" as well and cashing in on this seasons record built by playing a bunch of NAIA or NAIA level teams as well as not knowing what Whiteside was or is going to do regarding the NBA ( for all we know he may be academically ineligible next year to boot, thats another story) and  one other issue , Mike Hamrick..now I say this as in Hamrick is not Kayo by any means..Jones could run over Kayo and do darned well what and as he pleased , but with Hamrick , Jones had met his match so to speak. If this is in fact part of the reason then so be it and thanks Mike , its about time Marshall had an AD that is actually the guy running the department as well as making coaches toe the line.

I may be way off on the idea of "friction" between the two but somehow I think this played a major roll in Jones leaving in addition to striking while the iron was hot regardless of how this seasons record was obtained. Time will tell as Jones may be in over his head big time with all the talk and promises already made regarding the UCF program , they obviously have the money to get rid of Jones as quickly as they hired him should he fail to produce at the pace UCF appears to expect. Who knows within 3 years Pikeville College may look good to him again.

  • well if he was going to go down hill next season then its probably better for all of us that he left.  DJ may of looked at it this way too.

With a new AD and new fundraising...lets go get a better coach. I will leave it up to Hammrick to do that.

  • One of my favorite groups E-Man,  The O'Jays.  Hey "E" did you hear where the Spinners are coming to Harris Riverfront on Aug 13th.  Man I love their stuff.  I can still see the scence in the movie Stripes when John Candy is mud wrestling the chicks and they are playing Rubber Band Man in the background.  That is a classic scene.

With all the verbosity and guessing and volumes of pure speculation, your position seems closest to reflect human nature. It is about the money. If you think s few extra few hundred grand and a paid move to sunny Florida is not enough on its own....well..............it is. Stay in Huntington for another year with no sure thing in site, or move to sunny Orlando and pocket multiples of $100k as an added bonus. There is no need for any other reasons.

I didn't know the Spinners were going to spin their wheels here again this Summer. Man, I love their music and a few of my favorites are, I'll be around and Could it be Im falling in love? Motown always got the props, but the hits of (Philly International )and it's genius composers, (Gamble, Huff, and Thom Bell,) IMO, was equally, if not better than Motown......

I always liked the Philly sound, maybe it is the Hal Greer connection. ;) I am a big fan of Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes with or without Teddy. RIP Harold and Teddy. Wake Up Everybody.

Flat Tire, you and The Right Stuff are pretty hip dudes! You cats know your sounds. I have to admit, my favorite groups are
Earth, Wind and & Fire, and Chicago!!!! whenever they are in concert, the Fire dept has to be on standby, because they have been known to burn the house down,,, ;D
