  • Hey folks, many of you probably got an email from Sam this morning concerning the cancellation of the roundball banquet, and change of event date for the ladies team.  I wrote him back to see if we could follow through on some of your notes/ideas from yesterday.  My email is below.  Hopefully he will respond with some positive opportunities for us.

    Good morning Sam,

There are a couple posts on the sports boards where some are considering trying to put together something for the basketball teams, funded by donations from those of us who share thoughts and opinions on line.

    Couple questions?

    1.  Can this be done within the guidelines of the NCAA?
    2.  Would the Big Green be willing to help drive something for this team?
    3.  From what you have heard and seen from the players, would they be interested and appreciative?
    4.  Are any of the coaches still employed by MU at this time; someone who could preside over the event?

Finally, there has been some talk of encouraging some recognition for the team at the upcoming BG events for the spring football game.  Could something be done then?

    Looking forward to your response

  • Good one...I'm still in on doing something outside of the school, but within guidelines.

  • Got this back from Sam just now.

"I just talked to John Sutherland and something is in the works. He will be comtacting you and others who are concerned about this in a day or two."

Will keep you posted.  If someone wants the lead on this, just let me know.  Sounds like we may be in for an opportunity to live up to our commitment to these fine young men.

This baffles me.  If something was in the works, why didn't they include that in the original e-mail saying the event was off - that way to avoid any backlash.  Poor PR, especially for an organization in need of cash and a sport in need of continued support.

  • There was nothing in the works...that is the answer you got because you mentioned that some of us were willing to do something.

That is crap...the admin doesn't give a damn about those kids.  The money they made the school has already been spent...they are old news.

  • Having been in a position to make "emergency plans" at the last minute.  I know that it's good to not mention the possibility until you are sure you can pull it off.  If all the pieces do not fall into place then it really looks bad.  Maybe this is the case in this situation. NMO

The original email came from the basketball office that was coordinating the event with the Victory Club.  The email that Larry was referring to was from the Big Green Office.

I have said this several times in several places.  Mac-Reedo's is willing to donate the space and prepare and serve the food at cost.

  • I did, and suppose all Big Green members did, get a mass distribution note from John Sutherland saying that they were looking at putting something together for the team later in the spring.  It is correct as noted that this is coming from the Big Green, not the basketball office.

I have noticed a lot more marketing and publicity coming from the Big Green since Hamrick arrived and John got himself settled into the leadership role at the BG.  At times it seems odd, but if it works, more power to the whole admin. If I remember correctly, the BG is now part of the athletic department, so maybe it all makes sense.

Anyway, if I get anything back directly that is not publically published, I will make sure it gets posted.  Sure hope we get a chance to help if needed.
