  • I didn't know Old Minion had football, I guess they revamped it a few yrs ago.  DIAA (or whatever it is called now) had a good yr 9-2 gives scholies.  Maybe he is a corner and he doesn;t know it yet!!

  • Doc realizes that Marshall needs players.  He'll take chances on this type of kid, transfers and props until he can fill a roster of players who can be competitive.  I suspect that the kid will be given a short leash but if he's going to be a walk on, the cost to the program is minimal.

Hmmmm I was going to say something like, 'I think he'll fit right in' until I read the article.  for those too lazy to hit the link..

"For those in the dark, Martinez was one of 13 arrested Friday in Hampton on multiple gang-related charges. The police have linked Martinez to the 36th Street Bang Squad, a sect of the Bloods national criminal street gang that operated in Hampton.
Martinez, 19, has been charged with malicious wounding, conspiracy to commit malicious wounding, maiming by mob, gang participation, assault and battery, assault and battery by mob, and robbery."

If this is what is being brought to Huntington, wow, I hope he signed one of those contracts!!!

Please tell me why MU has to give him his last second chance???  Do we really need him?  Is this the only place he can rehab??
is he that good to justify what could go wrong??  Heck the only scholie he had was to 1aa!!  I hope he can play corner.  Are we in that bad a situation the we need a 5'8" RB???  that hasn't played for a yr?
I'd understand if this was the second coming on Hershal Walker or something, but we got to be better than this!

The article says that his coach is friends with Phil Ratliff.  Perhaps this coach called Phil and said, in effect, 'hey - there's a good kid here that has gotten in with some bad types.  He needs a second chance and getting him away from the Tidewater area would be a good thing'?  I trust that Doc and Phil know a lot more than we do, and if they believe that its worth letting him walk-on to prove himself, then I'll defer to their judgment.

I think the better judgement would be something along the lines, ' let me call my old pal so & so at WV tech/state/Glenville, and I think they will have a spot for him.'

  • unless that video changes him from 5'8" to 6'2 I could care less.  this is a bad risk v reward.  At least with a guy like Bradshaw,  his was a D& D or something like that.  He signed with UVA, a couple steps above a relatively new 1aa school.  I'll give second chances to kids like that all day.  If he were in a fight at a school dance, okay mabe.  This is too much, IMHO.

  • You guys casting the first stone and being unwilling to give a kid another chance read on.
Someone mentioned Glenville State as a place to send him.
A few years ago Glenville took a chance on a player named Jerry Seymour. He had been at Central Michigan and was involved in a gang-type fight and ended up committing manslaughter. He was not given a second chance at CMU and wound up at GSC where he was a model of decorum and a good citizen of the community.
He graduated from GSC after being twice all-WVIAC. He is now playing in the CFL.
He was given a second chance and it worked.
All Marshall is offering is a second chance. We all should be willing to allow one.

  • Just like all the Monday morning QB's, the good thing for Tron is that Doc is the only one that matters.  Doc is willing to take a chance and we've been told by many how dr. Kopp interviews all recruits.  If we don't trust Doc and Kopp, then we need to start a ground-swell of support for their firing...otherwise, shut-up and let them do their jobs.

I for one am happy with anyone Doc brings to town.  He's got 30 years experience with college students and is widely seen as one of the better recruiters in the country.  He knows a lot more about kids, recruiting and specifically this kid than anyone here.

    Welcome to town!

  • I also heard that Dr.Kopp insisted that DJ get rid of the Powell kid that was brought in from Florida when he got into some trouble with some of our players notably Dago.

I'm with you TRS...if he come here and is even around trouble, he's got to go.  But if they think he's worth and deserving of a chance, I'm fine with that.

  • How many people were saying DQ should have been gone after his 2nd or 3rd offense?  From what I've heard he's done a 180 degree turn.  If Snyder would have brought this guy in I would worry but not with Doc.  Doc has waited a long time for a head coaching gig.  I really don't think he would risk losing his job by bringing in bad kids.  Time will tell.
