My best friend, my kids call him their uncle, was member of the 1992 National Championship team. Today at about 1pm his home was broken into and one of the things taken was his safe containing his ring. We've called all the pawn shops locally and put them on the look out, but they were less than reassuring about the prospects of helping. He lost a couple of guitars (one a very high-end Les Paul), a TV and a Joe Montana autographed football too along with some $$ in the safe, but he is very upset about the ring.

If you see online or hear of a Marshall ring for sale, I'd appreciate any help you can give.

Man that really, sucks. Where does he lives or more importanly what agency will be working his burglary?

I would offer a couple peices of advice. Have the police report as much of the the stolen property as possible into NCIC as stolen property. It's very important because his stuff could turn up monthes or years later in different states and the only way for an out of state agency to know that the property is stolen and to whom it belongs.

Also request the police send an AM State Message bolo out on your property.

Most pawnshops report and use "leadsonline", a software that tracks stolen merchandise so make sure the police check it for you.

Finally I would maybe run some ads in his local area wanting to buy specific types of property that were stolen from your friend. It may sound silly but has worked in past.

He lives here in Huntington. The HPD will be the ones working it I would assume. He is within the city limits.

Mafia, I'll put out the word in the hood. I'm sure whoever broke into the home it was for drugs. They seem to always go to the pawn shop or their local drug dealer.

Huntington PD is a good agency, it sucks because he's close to the OH and KY borders. All the more reason to use NCIC and leadsonline, though.

I will holler at some folks I know on the street. If it is being dold or traded in my area, I will definitely know about it.

That's awful. I hope they catch whoever did it and recover everything. But if it's some crack head, they're going to be trying to pawn that ring not sell it on ebay. I would call every pawn shop in the area. I'll bet that ring will turn up around Huntington and lead to the arrest to who ever did it. Stupid-ass criminals.

We've already done every pawn shop in Huntington and Ashland. Unfortunately, they said that they receive very few pieces of jewelry anymore. The crackheads melt the jewelry down themselves and hit the "cash for gold" places because there is no way to trace blocks of gold! Not looking good.

What is really sad is the HPD told him that they would be in contact with him within a week!!!! Said the number of robberies is so high that they can't do reports on them all when they happen. His front door was kicked in!!!!! Yet the police are stretched so thin with drug related crime that it's going to take them a week to even come out and take a statement and are NOT going to do any fingerprinting, etc.

What the hell is happening to this world?

I m telling you, go print out some flyer's that say you are a private party that buys gold from individuals, say the usual

* pay top dollar
* cash paid on the spot
* Will come to you
* No photo ID required

Post them up and maybe you'll get the ring back

Mafia, I hate to say this but I would maybe advise the your friend to go down the station and ask to speak to the chief of detectives during business hours. See if he'll send a patrol unit out to file the initial report and then your friend can fax over all the descriptions / serial numbers to the records clerks at HPD.
It is true that the police can't do a whole lot, but they can at least take the report and put the property in NCIC.

I just hope the stuff isn't half way to Detroit already.

The jewelry and everything can be melted down, but the Les Paul is a different story. It should be easily tracked, it has a serial number, it's large and hard to conceal, only has value to musicians.

After knowing the area, I would bet this as well. Someone that would know he had the ring and would know they would not be home at 1pm during the day. Pretty bold to break in, in broad day light. I would be checking out my neighbors if I were him.

And check your Facebook friends, they're not always your friends. After a while they know when you aren't home and they can see what you have in your house by looking at the photos you upload.

We're exploring that possibility now. Neighborhood is pretty solid, but you never know. Thanks for the advice and suggestions guys. Working the internet hard today. Did the pawn shops yesterday. Doing the law tomorrow.

Yes, very good point GB. I'm amazed at how open some people are on FB and announce there personal info like street address, phone numbers and daily where abouts to their "friends". My guess is still that it's not a random thief or you would have other break-ins in the neighborhood. I'll bet he was targeted and somebody stupid enough to do this will be stupid enough to post about it on FB or talk too much to their circle of friends. I'll bet they catch this person.

I hope he gets his stuff back, especially the ring. That has sentimental value and a history attached to it that can't be replaced.
