  • Pennington will require surgery to repair a torn ACL after suffering the injury in a basketball game.

Pennington was just getting close to full health after a fourth shoulder surgery. He won't be ready for the start of the 2011 season, which makes it unlikely that he'll sign by the end of the summer. This could be the end of the line for the hard-luck 34-year-old.

I'm sure if he wants to come back he could do it but at some point you just have to start worrying about being pain free later in life.

I would say Chad passed the "chronic lifelong pain" threshold about 9 surgeries ago!

"When you take that field today, you've got to lay that heart on the line, men. From the souls of your feet, with every ounce of blood you've got in your body, lay it on the line until the final whistle blows. And if you do that, if you do that, we cannot lose."

  • Basketball! that's why I don't play anymore.  At my last job, basketball was played twice a week for fun, after work.  After several years of playing, we couldn't believe at the amount of major injuries that guys had received, Torn ACLs, Torn MCLs, Torn Achilles, Torn Biceps, back and ankle injuries.

  • I have a friend who is an orthopedic and he says that 95% of the ACL injuries in guys 30 and over come from guys playing basketball.
He was a good athlete and refuses to play because of it.

Yeah, I was over 30 when it got me, but I've seen guys right out of college, maybe 25-28, have a blow out and be off sick for 2-6 monthes.

Yeah it's not a good idea at all to play in a mens league, when you're 30+.  It's ok to play in the driveway with the kids / grand kids, but you're just asking for trouble otherwise.

Sounds like a punch of pansies if they were off sick for 2+ months over an acl.
