Thundering Herd has "thud" practice on first day of full pads this spring

    By Woody Woodrum

HUNTINGTON - For the first two days of spring drills at Marshall, no one was sore.

No one got into a scuffle with a teammate.

Coaches were shouting encouragement and trying to really coach up the newcomers and returning players, out on the FieldTurf of the Joan C. Edwards Stadium in their shorts, sweats and jerseys without any pads on.

    On Saturday, that all changed.

Suddenly, the explosive sounds of plastic shoulder pads meeting polycarbonate helmets could be heard ringing over the additional volume and intensity from all the members of the coaching staff.

Things got off to a fast start with a one-on-one blocking drills, with one defender on one offensive player. While the day had a number of draws, big pushes were made by senior defensive end Vinny Curry, red-shirt frosh offensive linemen Josh Lovell and Chirs Jasperse and sophomore Corey Tenney, and even true freshman receiver Eric Sims.

No one turned up the volume more than second-year Thundering Herd head coach Doc Holliday, who reserved judgement on who or what went best on the first of 13 days the Herd will spend getting prepared for that challenging 2011 schedule.
