  • Well said SVHerd! 7pm is like pizza and beer for Herd football. I know Hamrick was aware Herd fans wanted night games, and he's done a lot thus far, there has to be a rea$on.

  • You know they can tee it up at 6 am and I will support The Herd and try to be there. We talk about getting fried in the stands. I got fried in the west stands via the K/State game. (11:30) am start. I still don't believe Hamrick is aware of the studies, desires and facts that go into Herd Football.
It is not too late to correct this situation. Only 5 home games and at times our family supporters, many of our long time older supporters and many of our students cannot attend. Come on Mike???? You have done so much for our University since becoming our AD. Please look into this and tweak this one mistake.

  • When we get better again we'll have a better opportunity to dictate when and where we play...although even THE Ohio State University had to shift a game to Thursday night for the freakin' Big Ten Network...which was probably a good thing for a guy who had to work on a Thursday night...

  • I rode a bus sponsered by Herd Fans  back in the 70s. This was before the Tea Party. We had a keg of beer on the bus and had a great time, although I do admit their may have been one or maybe two socialists on the bus; not to mention a couple of ladies discussing abortion during the ride over. However the biggie for me: I do remember that ditch the driver parked next to was a real trick for many of us Herdfans.

Please go and support The University on opening day at Morgantown.

  • I like to look at things in black and white terms...either you want to come to games (and will) or you are looking of an excuse to not come (and probably won't regardless of times).

  • Oh, wvm, don't get me wrong. I would love to continue to look at things in black and white terms. I read your posts, and have the utmost respect for you and your thoughts.  I find myself living in a much more diverse society today and I first learned this at, you guessed it, MU. To be all we can be for everygame in everyway this fall we need to play at 7.

Do you think that the team cares when the games start?  Do you think that they play better at certain times?

  • Maybe it was based on the 90s thru early 2000's but we were dominant at night. Seemed like the place was more electric.

During the 90's and early 2000's we were simply good ---- could've played 4am kickoffs and won 9+ games!

The team doesn't care...and I bet if we polled the players that they don't like "sitting around" all day waiting to play a night game.

  • When\IF CSS gets syndicated onto directtv you may feel differently...

CSS will never get on satellite...It is Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast.  Owned by a cable company and in large part used as leverage to get people to use cable, in the areas they where Comcast or Charter cable is available, vs. DirecTV or Dish Network.

  • Wvm you are a very intelligent poster, and a very busy businessman I am sure; so you may have missed the main point to many of our posts: It's all about putting Herdfans in the seats.
    1. The University study showed we have a majority student body who finds it necessary to work mostly at the mall on Saturdays. If they know a home game is to be played at 7 they can get home and change in time for the game.
    2. The University study showed we have a great % of adults who find it necessary to work many times past retirement, but can still get home in time to make a 7 game.
    3. The University study showed we actually have fans who leave Huntington ... Go to Morgantown ... and make it back to Huntington in time to watch and cheer on the Herd.
    4. The University study as well showed we have a significant % of supporters who have their children involved in youth sports, and cannot make an earlier start time then 7.
This is our situation, not mentioning the chairbacks who are playing golf in the day, but will make a 7 game.
This was a 25 point study and even though the players may very well be on the field at 6:00 am the fans may not be available for various reasons.

There isn't any situation to correct.  We were media darlings back in the day because people could see us and video was available for Sportscenter.  We need to be on TV.  The same 25k +/- will show up in the 40k capacity Joan at 2:30 or 7...Maybe not the same exact people but its not as if attendance necessariy suffers.  We need those millions of others out there to see us in order to get our brand recognition back up.  Remember that Marcum had an agenda to keep us off of TV, thinking he was sucking up to the conference and their contract. Now we negotiate greater exposure and with that exposure comes TV revenue beyond the CUSA contract.

  • Im4theherd I call (bleep) on this. The University still does have time to correct this wrong. If you are satisfied sitting at Bank Of America stadium with no one there I can understand your reply, but if you care about fans in the stands at MU stadium, we need to make a change. Otherwise, call the boys in NMB for a donation.

  • Numbers:

2008/2009/2010 averages, does not include WVU which would sell out at any time and skews any averages unfairly.

    18 total home games, 11 afternoon (12N, 3P, 3:30, 4:30), 7 evening (7 or 8); 4 weekday games (1 Friday, 1 Tues, 1 Wed)

    2008 overall avg - 24765
    2009 overall avg - 22235
2010 overall avg - 24125 (again, does not include WV)
    3 year avg - 23684
Weekday avg - 24518 (includes UC Friday game - 28237)
All Sat afternoon avg - 22778
Sat afternoon avg less last games which avg only 20080) = 23788
    All PM avg - 25345
    SAT PM Avg - 26173

These numbers may not even be statistically significant, but the question breaks down to: Is the TV exposure and revenue worth it (to MU, not to the individual fan) to get 2500 more fans in the stands, still leaving almost 14k seats empty no matter the time?

Interesting that the average for Doc's first year in 2010, leaving out WVU which even Snyder could sell out, is less than Snyder's 2008 year.

As noted earlier, I MUCH prefer night games myself, but also recognize that TV makes a huge difference in our exposure, particularly to FL recruits.  When we begin to win again, we will fill more seats, until then, get us all the exposure we can get.  Unfortunately, BofA stadium is empty because of the product on the field...When MU gets it's sh!t together, and it will, we'll get the attendance up no matter the kickoff time.

Thank you!  Obviously you get it, as usual!

Carolina, as a "businessman", I realize that in the current atmosphere of college sports, that butts in seats isn't necessarily where the money is at.  Would I love to see 40,000 people in the Joan every time we play a home game and the game being scheduled at the "optimum" time?  Well of course.  As a lifelong resident of Huntington, I know how important the games are to the economy.  But you and I have to realize that Mike Hamrick isn't trying to make ends meet for Huntington business people.  He's doing what makes his department the most money.  Sacrificing 5,000 people @ an average ticket cost of $27 is $135,000 --- if sacrificing that $135k gets us on TV in front of 1,000,000 households and we get 2 athletic recruits attention and 5 student recruits attention + the TV money --- the smart businessman sacrifices the $135k.

Too many people, and I'm not accusing anyone in particular, just making a general statement, think that college sports is all about the game day stadium experience...that simply isn't the case.

To sum MY perspective up, if we can have 25,000 in the stands and 1,500,000 watching on TV @ 11am or 32,000 in the stands and be on a regional feed where there is 200,000 households capable of tuning in @ 7pm--- I say play the game at 11am!  In the long run, the school gets more benefit and that's what it's all about.  We have to make EVERY decision with the bank balance in mind, because we can't afford to fall one dime further behind in the battle for the college sports dollar.
