HUNTINGTON -- Marshall University recruit Devince Boykins left his mark on the North Carolina Coaches Association East-West All-Star boys basketball game Monday night with a dunk.Boykins had 11 points for the West squad in a 100-93 victory in the Greensboro Coliseum.Anthony Stitt of Charlotte Butler led a three-on-one fast break and lobbed an alley-oop pass to Boykins, who slammed it in for a 97-93 lead with 37 seconds left, according to a report by the Winston-Salem (N.C.) Journal newspaper."We drew that play up," joked West coach David Price of Greensboro Dudley in a report by the Burlington (N.C.) Times-News.Jackson Simmons from Sylva Smoky Mountain, a 6-foot-8 North Carolina Tar Heels walk-on, was selected as the game MVP with 19 points and 15 rebounds. John Cannon, a 6-11 Georgia Bulldogs recruit from Mountain Heritage, added six points and had nine rebounds.Boykins made a layup with about two minutes left that put the West ahead to stay. He also fired in a 3-point shot earlier in the fourth quarter.The 6-3 Boykins from East Rutherford High, the Class 2A state champion, had senior season averages of 17.2 points, 13.5 rebounds, 1.6 steals, 1.5 blocked shots and 3.0 assists. He was an all-state selection and the South Mountain Athletic Conference player of the year.
Boykins is a really good athlete with excellent hops who loves to dunk it! And he can shoot the three too. Signing him early was huge for us. He made the NC all-state team, which is comprised of the 12 best players regardless of class.
