EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the fourth of a 12-part series previewing Marshall's opponents for the upcoming football season.

HUNTINGTON -- Another year, another probable 10-win season, another near-certain trip to the Atlantic Coast Conference title game.

    Ho-hum.

It's getting to be that third guarantee in life: death, taxes and the Virginia Tech football team will finish the season somewhere in the Top 20.

Frank Beamer, who enters his 25th season as head coach in Blacksburg, Va., has taken a stranglehold of the new Atlantic Coast Conference since the Hokies, along with Miami, moved from the Big East in 2004 (Boston College joined one year later), winning four titles in seven years. But with all that recent success, the Hokies have never finished higher than No. 7 and never lower than No. 18 in the final Associated Press poll.

In other words, they're always just right there. Relevant enough to be put in the discussion, but not dominant enough to join the elite.

The blame can be put on slow starts. Throw out the first two games of its schedule and Virginia Tech is 39-8 since 2007. But in the last four years, the Hokies are just 1-3 in openers and last season lost its second game, an embarrassing 21-16 shocker to James Madison of the Football Championship Subdivision.

  • Can someone tell me why the HD is writing this garbage?!

All these articles do is depress the fanbase, draw turds like Big Jim Slade who is a total idiot to rant and write all this negative anti-Marshall bull%^&*, and give no positive spin on the games at hand.

Seriously, the damn press and people have got to stop living in the past...both with forever to never be replicated Moss and Pennington days over a decade ago to more recently, our horrible string of head coaching blunders leaving the HD virtually exposed for lack of journalistic creativity. They have to go on what happened last year, telling the casual uneducated in sports I just show up for games fan, that nothing can change in a year.

If anything make it more sports related and talk about predictions on offenses run vs defensive strengths and weaknesses. I want positive all-around coverage of our team...preferably not the monster QB they have. They don't hardly mention experience of this guy or even if the OL is going to be able to contain Vinny Curry.
Nope, instead the collective idiots writing decide to make it as though Marshall has already lost.
