  • Coach Pruett is getting any younger so who knows how much longer he'll be around.

Just curious who the faithful would want to succeed Coach P.

My vote- Bob Pelini - Def Cord. at LSU now, was DC at OK

Who do you want??  You can answer 2 ways 1)Who do you want?? 2)Who do we have a realistic chance at getting??

Pruett isn't going anywhere till Kayo steps down as AD, then he will become the AD. as to coach. Its something we will worry about then.

  • My wish list (with Marshall backgrounds):
    1.  Mark Snyder
    2.  Tony Petersen (if he has enough experience)
    3.  Coach Gale (don't know if he'd be interested in the HC, if not, he would be a great asset to the new HC.

  • I'd love to see Coach Gale get it.  He's been here forever, and has ties to the local community (wife is from Ironton).

Besides that, I'd like to see Snyder (If interested) or maybe even ....(dare I say it?) .... Carl Lee.

I'd prefer a alum, unless its Gale.  We don't need another Donnan or Donovan who will leave in a couple of years.  We need someone who will stick around.

Maybe Micky Matthews, but his regular season record isn't great, which it has to be in I-A.

  • Possible candidates:

    (1) Larry Coyer - MU Alum - Def. Coord. Denver Broncos
    (2) Mark Snyder
    (3) Tony Peterson
    (4) Mickey Matthews
    (5) Coach Gale
    (6) Tim Billings

Probably other OCs and DCs at "name" programs will be interested as well.

  • Mark McHale.

Like Pruett had to do years ago - he has gone off to a big time program to get the final thing needed for the resume.

I feel like he will be first choice of the new AD - Pruett.  But then again - you never know who will be available when this position does come open.

  • Some good suggestions, the consensus seems to be someone with a Herd background.

Let me dispell one myth right now so it doesn't influence peoples choices: Coach Pruett will NEVER be the AD, I know some people seem to think that that plan is already in place.  Let me assure you it is not and that will not happen.

Olen, do you realize that Larry Coyer was a teammate withf Bob. I don't think that Larry would be interested in becoming a college coach at this point in his life.

Yep - Coyer is a few years older than Pruett, if I remember correctly.

Coyer may not be interested - that is why I labeled the list as "possible" candidates rather than "probable" candidates.  Not knowing Coyer myself, and having never read anything in print as to whether he is or is not interested in being the Marshall head coach, I was simply speculating on those that have enough experience to lead and have significant ties to Marshall.

If Coyer is in fact not interested, I would imagine other considerations are as important, if not more so, than age - including Marshall's inability to even come close to paying Coyer what he is making as an NFL defensive coordinator.

My personal guess is that if an MU alum is hired, it is probably going to come down to Snyder and Peterson, and maybe Greg Adkins (Tennesseee).  I doubt the candidate focus will be that narrow, though.[/quote]

  • If the Coach's health stays decent; I don't see him retiring from coaching The Herd until he nears 150 to 200 victories.  Seriously!

  • Here's my far-fetched, dreamy wish:

Troy Brown retires after the 2005 season with the Patriots; maybe even retires this spring.

Troy joins the coaching staff at Marshall as a WR position coach for a year or two. Then, Troy moves up to OC for a couple of more years.

After that time, Kayo calls it quits, Bobby P. moves into Kayo's office, and Troy Brown, with all three Super Bowl rings, takes over as Head Coach at Marshall.

  • How do we know Troy can coach though. Just because ya have a SB ring, doesn't mean ya can coach.
