HUNTINGTON -- When Marshall's Thundering Herd meets Western Carolina on Saturday, it will be a matchup of football teams that seem miles apart.

Marshall moved up to NCAA Division I-A in 1997, thus leaving the Southern Conference and the Catamounts behind.

While this is the first contest between the teams in 16 years, the teams have a storied history behind them. The all-time series between the teams stands at 9-9-2 -- an impressive mark considering the Herd was 0-8-2 in the first 10 meetings.

Following is a look at some of the games and memorable performances in the 20-game series.

  • What about 1995 or 1996?  One of those was a loss at wcu and I was there to watch them tear down their goal post...it was a big deal to beat us...

  • I remember when Barry Childers hit the 59-yard field goal and after the game Sonny Randle, as only Sonny could do, exclaimed, "No doubt about it, Barry Childers is the eight wonder of the world!"
