  • Whoever is in charge, this is what I want fixed...To buy $100 worth of anything, it costs me over $165 once sales taxes and all the federal and state taxes taxes paid on the income needed to make the purchase are factored in. To fill up your tank, you pay almost $35 in taxes*. We would all be shocked to total up all of taxes we actually paid in the course of a year. Just don't see where I am getting my money's worth.

    * $50 worth at $3.50/gal; 54 cents per gallon total NC & Fed gas tax plus income taxes on the $50 paid.

  • It might be more effective if you put a tooth under your pillow and waited for the tooth fairy to leave you some money.   Santa claus and the easter bunny are also good options.

I did find it ironic that gas prices at my local station were the lowest they've been in 18 months this past weekend.   We could teach Kim Jong il lessons on how to manipulate the sheeple and tell them how much freedom and economic growth we have had the last 4 years.   Price went up 60 cents yesterday.

Saw a electoral college map in the paper today.   Less than 10% of the geographic areas were blue.  The rest of the country was red.   Kind of sums up the situation.
“This year will go down in history. For the first time a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient and the world will follow our lead into the future.” —Adolf Hitler, 1935

Proposed 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution: "Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives; and, Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States."

I don't get into politics much on here or anywhere, but that last statement is exactly my issue with what has happened in 4 years. There's such a great divide there seriously may not be a way to fix it peacefully. Resolution is needed and our great elected leaders need to see all views. I'm sure if they REALLY tried and listened they could appease 70-75%. Instead they go on their agendas to appease a party and get 52% support.

  • The map of red versus blue counties is misleading. Vast majority of people live in the city. The whole state of WV wouldnt make a borough in NYC.

I do think the electorial college has passed its usefullness but changing the constitution is virtually impossible.

100% correct.  The truth is he won the populated areas.  Put the large cities on that electoral college map and you will see what I'm talking about.  Now take the electoral college map from 2008 and compare it to 2012 map.  VERY similar...almost identical.

I'm not one for talking politics either, especially not on a message board.  However, this is more fact based, not opinion.

  • You could see Ohio turn from red to blue as the counties with that had Cleveland, Columbus and Todelo in them reported from 10-11 pm....The news said that people were "bused in" to cast their vote?  Bused from where? By whom?

  • This is one reason why.

The U.S. federal effective corporate tax rate has become much lower than the nominal rate because of tax shelters such as tax havens.

So how do you ensure corporations pay what they use to pay, when our economy was strong. While allowing them to have the Capitol they say they need, to create more jobs?

    A Fair Tax maybe?

Would you pay a doubled tax rate on new purchases, if you didn't have to pay income taxes and file returns every year? While everyone who has the disposable income, contributes the tax system. Including all the new contributors like drug dealers, mobsters, bookies, criminals, gamblers, etc. while simultaneously cutting back on governmental entities. e.g., IRS. That are needed for our current overly complex and inefficient Tax system.

  • Minor detail on the corporate tax rate.   The US does not operate in a vacuum anymore.  You could probably argue that in 1947 we had no peers or competition in the manufacturing world.   Now that's not the case.     It's a global economy so if you raise rates a corporation just relocates to a more favorable tax environment.   It's the same on labor costs, energy, litigation and environmental costs.  obviously those are all lower but taxes seem to be the biggest driver of outsourcing.

Of course,  the other issue is that someone has to buy the goods produced.  If we all work at McDonald's or service jobs that's not going to produce much of a wealth pool to buy goods.

It is a balance act and obviously it's out of balance for the US.  However,  if you increase taxes you have to give the relief somewhere whether it's regulation, litigation, environmental or energy costs.    Europes proven that a well educated and trained workforce alone does not offset the other factors.  They are in a world of hurt right now.

Never thought of that one, but you're right....I buy everything I can American....but you don't have to be real good at math and common sense to realize that we can't compete with countries that produce products at 1/4 of the cost of the same thing made in the US. ..

(On non-technology based things, I try to find American made stuff that was made in the 1950's and 60's....Love that stuff, great steel, solid craftsmanship)

I'm not arguing with you because you are correct.  However I will point out that the workers in those countries also do not benefit from those types of programs because they do not exist.

  • Actually quite a few of those countries have the programs you reference.

we pay to educate half the arab world even though they float on a sea of oil.  Of course in a lot of those countries girls can't go to school or if they do they get raped and beaten like cure dogs.

we also pay billions upon billions for "health care".   most of this is lost somewhere between entering the country and making it to the hospital.

we also pay billions to countries for ecological help.   however,   someone forgot to tell china who's building a coal fired power plant a week.

we pay tens of billions a year to "defend" helpless countries like S Korea and Germany.   They, of course, have booming surpluses while we have over a million dollars a tax payer in debt and liabilities.

we give tens of billions to the UN so they can shyte all over us and tell us how egregious our human rights abuses are.

Given how much the world "loves us" it might be time to put some of that money to use back home.   It sure can't make us any less popular than we are.

Yes but that's US supplying that to them.  Without us those countries don't have the social programs.  Our dumb @$$es pay for it.

  • Not to mention the President has done the hokey pokey dance on the mortgage interest deduction since day one. Even when asked straight up yesterday, he did the backstreet boo-ga-loo on the issue. This will be a major mistake if this particular tax deduction goes south.
No political dreamer was ever wild enough to think of breaking down the lines which separate the States and compounding the American people into one common mass.
