Restaurant Review: Guy’s American Kitchen & Bar in Times Square

GUY FIERI, have you eaten at your new restaurant in Times Square? Have you pulled up one of the 500 seats at Guy’s American Kitchen & Bar and ordered a meal? Did you eat the food? Did it live up to your expectations?

Did panic grip your soul as you stared into the whirling hypno wheel of the menu, where adjectives and nouns spin in a crazy vortex? When you saw the burger described as “Guy’s Pat LaFrieda custom blend, all-natural Creekstone Farm Black Angus beef patty, LTOP (lettuce, tomato, onion + pickle), SMC (super-melty-cheese) and a slathering of Donkey Sauce on garlic-buttered brioche,” did your mind touch the void for a minute?

I personally like the show Diners, Drive Inns and Dives and I'm sure it and Fieri have helped some of the struggling mom and pop restaurants get recognition they would not have normally had. He is also very good at heaping praise on the show's chefs and owners.

I read somewhere several years back that he was just a normal family man running a restaurant and his friends dared/challenged him to go on the Food Network reality show Next Food Network Star. That's when he died his hair, put on the bling and started dressing like he does. My guess is this "Guy's American Kitchen and Bar" is nothing more than a tourist trap. What would you expect in Time Square with menu prices ranging from $8-$31? Sounds like sour grapes to me.

On the other hand... WTF is Donkey Sauce  :o

  • Ever notice how the restaurants with all kinds of glitz, gadgets and celebritries seem to fall short in the food area?

The inverse is that some of the most plain and functional places you'll ever go to have some of the best food.  The old southern fish camps are the perfect example.

The food should speak for itself.
“This year will go down in history. For the first time a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient and the world will follow our lead into the future.” —Adolf Hitler, 1935

Proposed 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution: "Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives; and, Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States."

Totally agree, some of the best places I've ate at are places where you'd get a splinter in your foot if you went barefoot.  I've only ate at a few "fancy" places but they were all way overpriced and the food was awful.  I'm sure there are some exceptions to the rule but heck, I can't tell you the last time I ate at a true restaurant...I enjoy cooking/smoking food too much to waste my hard earned money on someone else preparing it.
    GO HERD!!!

Totally agree with this. Some of the best food I have ever eaten came from a place with gravel for the floor.

  • Donkey Juice is what Fieri guzzles on Friday nights.  Fag.  But I do like that he highlights my kind of restaurants.  Agree.  Food is usually better in "dives."

  • In the 80's I ate at a restaurant in Houston called Dirty's. The best Chicken Fried Steak that I've ever had. I will be going to Houston next November and I hope that the place is still there. It say's it is online, but I can't find much info.

  • I ate several nights per week at a restaurant in Korea (4 miles from the DMZ).  It literally had NO floor, just the ground.  But the food was killer.

Why you gotta say he's a fag? I mean is he really? Even if he is, of everyone on tv these days, what could you possibly find about him not to like.  Good show, and he pretty well makes it.  Good taste in food and cars.  I don't know that I'd wanna go huntin' with him, but he seems alright to me...

Disclaimer-- I am married, to a woman, and definitely not a fag:)

Not literally.  He's just not my favorite host.  Alton Brown is good...always learn.  But Fieri definately finds my kind of food.
