  • Jimmy Clayton is local and considered one of the BEST shooting technicians in the country, Chicago Bulls brought him to their camp on many occasions. He used to have a shop/gym right there on 22 nd st, heckuva lot closer than Rick Barry but somehow I doubt that TH is gonna call for help.

That is what I told my Dad on Saturday.  Kane ought to shoot them like Rick Barry.  Or shoot a turn around jumper.

  • I believe you can teach them the mechanics but if they don't have the touch forget it.  You are either a good shooter or not a good shooter.  Some of the worst I've seen are Shaq O'Neal, Paul Silas, Wilt Chamberlin and Dennis Rodman.  All of which were centers or forwards.  There is no excuse for a guard not to be able to at least hit 70 - 80% of his free throws.

Ask Bruce Bowen...terrible FT shooter but could stroke the 3.  Nearly 40% from 3 and 58% from the line.  It happens.

    Rajon Rondo shoots 61%.

    Nick Anderson was under 70%.

It happens and probably more so at the collegiate level.  It's just a different shot.  I just love how everyone seemingly thinks he/she has the answer on how to make people better shooters.

In that case it would have to be mental. I would then shoot it like a regular jump shot.

  • Clayton would be GREAT.  As would G. White.  As would Mel Graham(ymca coach that taught me to shoot 90% aggregate in 4 years(WVU guy though, but a great guy and great coach as well)).  Hell, I can't think of very many coaches that I've come across that haven't preached the same mechanics/fundamentals.  And you know what?  They work.  Easiest shot in the history of basketball if taught correctly.  If you're Shaq O'Neil or someone like that and have just mutant strength/size of hands, I can kind of understand and just laugh.  The Herd has no such mutants.  Abysmal and w/ out excuse other than lack of coaching/repetition.  Hell, I could show these phenomenal athletes what I was taught 40 yrs. ago and they'd HAVE to improve.

  • This may be a novel idea but what if the guys being paid to coach on our team taught the players to make free throws. Shouldn't this be included in the price of their salary?  I know some were great players in their day. As Ernie used to say, "Pardon me for asking."

  • I've read many articles on this in the past....experts agree that if everyone shot granny shots at foul line, free throw making percentages would go up 10 to 15% across the board...never have understood why they don't go back to this...unless its all ego preventing this.

Has to do with physics (arch)

  • There is one cure for shooting free throws....shoot hundreds of free throw shots a day for a couple years....

If you can't make them after that then you will probably never make them....

Same thing with hitting golf balls....

Yes, the person would have to be a full-time staff member. D1 doesn't allow paid or free consultants, or "volunteer" coaches for football and MBB. The guys could go to Clayton and pay on their own.

  • Jim Clayton taught my High School team how to shoot free throws. Well I guess taught is too strong a word, he coached us up and helped us and our Free Throw percentage was always very high. MU should contact him if able.

  • I remember a guy that played for the Herd a few years back.  I think his name was Scott Williams.  He could light it up from 3, but was the worst FT shooter I think I have ever seen.  We always said he should move to just inside the top of the key and shoot a jumper.

  • Mason Plumlee from Duke went from a career FT percentage of around 50% to 76% this year by not bending over and dribbling the ball before shooting. He just takes the ball from the official and shoots. Seems simple but has really worked for him this year.
