CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- D.J. HUNTER richly deserves his honor as a Freshman All-American, as awarded by Sporting News, and it seemingly bodes well for the near future of Marshall football.

It does not speak well for the present, however.

Let's recap the honor roll for the Thundering Herd: Quarterback Rakeem Cato was named most valuable player in Conference USA, and running back Kevin Grooms is the freshman of the year.

Cato and receiver Tommy Shuler were first-team All-Conference USA picks, while receiver Aaron Dobson and tight end Gator Hoskins were second-team picks. Dominick LeGrande was a second-team pick on defense, while three offensive linemen were among the honorable mention picks.

  • my opinion we left wins on the field against OU, Tulsa, UAB and ECU.  Rice almost was in the same catagory.  Pitiful when you think about it.

Nail on the head. All games that given some coaching and proper in game adjustments we would all be talking a different talk right now and planning our bowl trip. All of the post season recognition to the talent of the individual players speaks volumes as does the record and lack of wins.

Yep.  And give me the film to refresh my memory and, within 2 hours, I could cite at least 3 reasons for each game (except possibly OU) why Chris Rippon was directly responsible.  I know there are SOME things that could have happened differently from an offensive perspective.  And I know Doc deservedly gets the blame.  But I'm not giving up on Doc.  I'm still a believer, so long as he makes a good DC hire and we see significant progress next year on D.  We CLEARLY have the tools, especially in Hunter and Holmes.  Again, average D and we win each of these games, comfortably.  Thank God he's out.

I'd love to hear from the defensive players, candidly, what they think went wrong.  I'd bet my paycheck that, if they answered candidly, there was something deeply wrong with the DC position, something more than just playcalling.

Doc was responsible for the OU loss.

  • The defense would make just enough stops to keep us in the game.  But when the they had to make a stop at a crucial time, OU, Purdue, UAB and ECU, they couldn't.

  • I'd love to know how many 3rd and longs we gave up for first downs, too, too many. Hell, we gave up several 4th and longs that lost the game for us. One thing about it, the defense can't get any worse than this fall.

OU and ECU - maybe the two most heartbreaking losses and in both a converted 4th and long could be said to have made the difference between 5-7 and 7-5.

Alabama only has, I think,  9-10 Seniors.

You mean the one where their 260 lb RB who runs a 5.5 forty ran about 40 yards for a TD?  Man, that one killed me.
