  • Ate at the Fat Patty's in Teays Valley for the first time Tuesday night and I have to say that it kind of made me sick having a girl with a shirt on that said "Let's go mountaineers" take us to our table and then having to stare at a picture of Mylan Puskar stadium while I tried to enjoy my "Born on the Bayou". They even have special blue and yeller t-shirts for the employees to wear and customers to buy. We were sitting there and the Lakers game was on tv. The wvu basketball game came on and they switched every tv in the house over to it. Made me sick. I love Crockett's Lodge wings in Star City. Maybe it's owner will be a gutless wonder and open up a location decked out in Marshall memorabilia so I can eat a wvu fans favorite pub grub while staring at my favorite team.

Not that it matters, but the owner is a HUGE Marshall fan.  He struggled about whether to embrace WVU programming, pictures, etc. in Teays Valley (and UK stuff in Ashland) but decided that he had to, from a business standpoint.  Can't blame him.

  • I can confirm that he despises wvu and is a huge Herd fan. Hate that he added wvu crap there but I get it.

I can blame him. He should be trying to market his food, not college sports. He made a decision that made it look like he doesnt have a pair. WVU fans have every bar/grill in the state to eat at if the only reason they are dining there is to stare at wvu garb. Trust me, I'm originally from the Charleston area and every place that is locally owned and not a chain, is decked out in wvu. If he did it for the reason you claim, he must not have much confidence in the food he is serving. AND, if he was struggling over the decision as you claim, and he does have confidence in his food, he could have decorated it in Hurricane, Winfield, Bufallo, and Poca high schools and still made his cash. He's just using that as an excuse for not having the testicular fortitude to stand up to the wvu propaganda machine.

Seems like a limiting business model if you tie a restaurant to a school.  Whats he going to do if he expands to Alabama, or South Carolina, or Michigan?

That's the point I'm trying to make. He must not have much confidence in his food. I guarantee that Dave Thomas and colonel Sanders didn't become rich and famous because they had OSU and UK decorations in their restaraunts.

It doesn't work that way at these sports type pubs folks.  He is in business to make money, period.

BW3's does it. Applebees does it. Quaker Steak does it.

He's an wvu fan ego feeder that lacks what it takes to stand up for what he believes in. If he thinks the thickness of his wallet depended on what he hung on his walls in his restaraunts, he obviously did ZERO research about the clientele. Being a Teays Valley resident, I know for a fact that there is very little to choose from in terms of dining in this area. Every restaraunt, whether the food sucks or not, has a wait every night due to lack of choices. He would have made his money in this area if he would have decorated the joint in Pitt gear. As long as there is grease and fat around here, the people will pay.

Did these places make a name for themselves by linking themselves to college sports? No. I remember when every Applebee's had nothing but music posters and antique crap for deco. I've eaten at the original Quaker Steak several times and there was no indication that they tied themselves to anything to make a name for themselves besides tasty food an motor oil. Your response is based too much on the modern versions of these places. This guy is tying his whole restaraunt to college sports teams.

  • I feel the same as my buddy Big Ol Hillbilly.  He has an option of not being a sports themed restaurant or whatever it is they are before kowtowing to that bunch.  How bout just letting your food and service win people over?

  • What about the hall of fame cafe?  They have multiple locations and change based on where they are.  If you are in the sports restaurant/bar business you have to cater to the area or you won't make it.

Last time I checked, I could be wrong, Teays Valley was 20 minutes from Huntington, 25 minutes from Charleston, and 3 hours from Morgantown. I could be wrong. Maybe I should watch my clock closer next time I make these voyages.

The food isn't that special. Just frozEn burgers and deep fried.   But it's also cheap and quick. He is n it for the money and u can't blame him. Don't like it? Go somewhere else

  • You know...you could always buy the place.  That's an option.  Then you can take all the WVU stuff down if you want.  Until then it's his business...don't eat there if you don't like what he puts up.

Whatever will I do if I don't have his nasty grease to eat anymore? I may take your advice and save my arteries. LOL only thing that is that good there is the black bean soup anyway.

  • Shaking my head...It is about making money.  I can't stand anything about WVU but you can bet if I was in the business to make money I would do the same thing.   My place would be covered in Marshall stuff but I would have some WVU crap as well.  You have to be able to serve all customers.  Does it make me happy?  No but I also would want to make money and would do things to cater to everybody.  I see it in Lexington and have seen it in Louisville.  When going into the business of Sports Bar...you have to think about all types of customers.  If I was in Huntington...there would be NO WVU stuff in my bar.  I would be like Connie.  Only Marshall stuff.

  • I call this two faced or hypocritical. Wouldn't trust a this flip flopper. I like Fat Patty's, but being principled I'll not frequent any of those establishments. This is part of my union upbringing. My dad was a registered Democrat for business purposes, but always voted GOP. Strange how weak people are brought to their knees by the Almighty dollar. A true HerdFan would never stoop so low. The owner just knows how to give lip service.

  • I ate at the TV one.......and my first thought was why do MU fans lose their minds over this...that place was AT LEAST 90% MU stuff...way more of the majority with a few token eer pics items.  they did have both blue and gold and green and white Fat Patty's shirts.  big deal.

and for blizz......it was named to top 50 or so burger joints in america and I was under impression it was supposedly fresh ground burgers...maybe not but whatever they are I like them.

  • When Fat patty's becomes a national chain and buy us a new stadium one day you guys will be singing a different tune.  You guys complaining about this are probably the same ones that are scared to go to games in Morgantown.

I walked through the whole place. It was about 60/40% in mu's favor. The wait staff was probably 80% blue and gold shirts.

They come from Gordon Food Service.  They are pre-cooked.  Just heat and serv.  They already come with the black grill lines on them.  Gordon's has stores that are open to the public in larger cities that you can buy them.  They are one of the best frozen burgers you can buy.  We get them for our Herd tailgates a few time a year.
