  • Do people in Huntington & Marshall ever work together on anything.  Just saw there is a big country concert this Saturday night.  Well, this is also the night of what is annually Marshall's biggest home games of the year with Memphis.  And, Marshall is also hosting Smoky Robinson the same night.

Now, I know when you bring in big acts you have to work with them on scheduling, but wouldn't it help everyone involved in a town this size to maybe have at least something on a different night.  Or, maybe this makes Huntington look good to have 3 big things going on the same night.  I don't know.  I would really like to see Smoky Robinson, but I am not missing the Memphis game.  I don't think even think the different groups at Marshall work together, let alone them all working with the arena.

At least the Southern Miss is on a Tuesday, because if it was the usual Wednesday night, we would have a Herd game and the Globetrotters competing.

  • Other places hosting Valentine's Day parties as well, like Sleepy Hollow GC.  It never has made any sense to me.  But not talking means you don't have to solve conflicts, and no one looses any power.  So it is no surprise that there appears to be no coordination.  I doubt the people making money off the concert care about MU's athletic fortunes or finances.  Now the MU Artists Series, that one is hard to grasp.

My best friend book shows for the Marshall artist series. Smokey just happend to have an opening the day of the game with Memphis. Marshall should have moved up the time slot to play the Tigers in the afternoon, so people could get ready for the Smokey Robinson concert.

  • A concert vs Marshall basketball game isn't that big of a deal in my opinion.  The CAM only holds 9k and Big Sandy Arena only holds what...6k or so?  There are plenty of people around the tristate to atten both. We have Marshall fans drive from outside of Huntington for both types of Herd events. I usually drive in for The Memphis game but can't make it this year.  People just have to set priorities.

The game on Saturday I also on TV. With how we are playing I can easily see people staying home and watching on TV.

  • Looks like Smokey is the winner, only upper balcony high seats remain.  Anyone know how many the Kieth Albee holds, 4500??  What country concert is in town?

TV, not MU, would dictate when the game time is and I'm certain they could care less about Smoky being in town.  May be the last time either are in town.

More like 2800.  I'm going to Smokey, and giving my b'ball tickets to my nephew.  I look at it this way:  No way I'm going to be disappointed in Smokey, but the chance of being disappointed in the b'ball team is about 50/50.  Plus, I'm taping the game.

You got that. People can knock Huntington, but one things for sure; the downtown hasn't looked this good or been this vibrant since I was a kid back in the 60's. Its great to see stores with shoppers and all the eateries packed.

The downtown area is incredible compared to late 90s and early 2000's. Now if the local politicians can get Hal Greer fixed up the city will really have a shot.

CBS chose the 8PM time slot for the Memphis game.

The first time I saw Smokey and The Miracles was in 1967. Then again in the mid 80's. Loved him both times. I would have loved to see him again, but Herd Hoops come first.

  • Just think, SR has been coming to Huntington for nearly 50 years, bet he'll be really great.  Hope he doesn't disappoint, but his recent gigs on TV have bee pitiful IMHO.  Nothing like holding onto the legends of the past.

  • Chuck Landon must have read our string here as he wrote on this subject today in the HD, looks as if he almost copied it actually.

And I don't know the last time he was here, but I know my wife saw him while she was at MU, and I was in Germany in the service; in either 68  or 69.  And I am pretty confident he has been here in the last 10 to 15 years as well.
