Topic: America 12 Conference is favorite to replace Big East name

Since the group of basketball schools known as the Catholic 7 will be taking the name Big East with them to their new conference, that leaves the conference currently known as the Big East in search of a new name.

According, to ESPN.com's Brett McMurphy, while the name isn't by any means official, the early favorite for the Big East's new name is the America 12 Conference.

I think if that sounded right, somebody would have used it long ago.  They'd be better off buying the name C-USA from us.   No originality at all.

I think it is basketball and the tourney that is in question, but my gut is that the NCAA will grant them some form of an exception.

I don't think they are forming a new conference, rather renaming an existing one.  They sold the name, or gave it up; but they did not dissolve the league.

Even "American 12" would IMO make more since, and sound a little better, or more marketable, or All American 12... Sounds more marketable as well... Maybe even Big American Conference?  When American 12 was all that was remaining on the black board; they should have chosen to keep thinking, they should have used some of the money they profited from selling the previous name, to hire someone to come up with 3 names?! Where do I send my resume? Lol they really do need some help it seems, I think the entire board and commissioner should be overhauled.  I believe that board is comprised of school presidents but I may be mistaken, and if thats the case, they should still go.  Heads should roll, even of the turnover of teams was beyond their control...

I guess in all reality, since there has been a near full cycle of teams leave and come in, the presidents are all new, so bye bye commish!!!

This is treading very close to C-USA's trademark. Same industry, same geographical footprint, and very similar name.  You can't open a hamburger shop named McDowell's next to a McDonalds. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

You can bet your house that the UConn and UC brass are working the phones hot and heavy to get out of that league. This has to be a huge step back in percieved prestige for those two schools.

And under that, is a picture of us, and "left behind in a much worse league". The hypocrisy and dillusion on this board amazes me.

Our fans don't mind being left behind. Our fans have given up aspiring to compete with the ECUs and the UCFs on a regular basis. They are happy to step back to play at a SunBelt level believing the program will dominate and even enjoy more revenue. Being left behind is actually considered the PREFERRED option.

So yeah... the irony escapes them. The pride of being a Herd fan has been ratcheted back so that ANY winning is paramount.

If that league is considered "getting ahead" at the coast of 12 million or so then I love me some La Tech, MTSU and Charlotte teams. Dont mind the Texas people either. Last I Herd, that was where Houston and SMU were located also. Only diff is that UTSA getd some fans out for FB. You guys must not understand Marshall's financial plight. Wonderland stuff Alice

I am very glad we stayed where we are, and I have been saying that from the beginning.  I see nothing attractive about the new conference at all.  UConn and Cincy will be gone as soon as possible, but even if they aren't they won't be what they have been.

Our new conference has some good schools, up and coming schools in football and established schools in basketball.  We now have a conference that reaches into the South Florida area, Charlotte, Virginia Beach area.  All great recruiting areas.  We are a much more regional conference now.  And with the new Fox network, even the TV is looking up.

I do not see anything at all this new conference has over CUSA, and I would imagine the teams who left are really regretting it now.
