  • If that league is considered "getting ahead" at the coast of 12 million or so then I love me some La Tech, MTSU and Charlotte teams. Dont mind the Texas people either. Last I Herd, that was where Houston and SMU were located also. Only diff is that UTSA getd some fans out for FB. You guys must not understand Marshall's financial plight. Wonderland stuff Alice

I don't suppose the news that the newbies are about to share in over $100 million in exit fees could even begin to make a difference in how you think about this... and the reason it doesn't is you've foreclosed to the conclusion... the its-mystory-and-I'm-stickin-to-it paradigm.

  • I am very glad we stayed where we are, and I have been saying that from the beginning.  I see nothing attractive about the new conference at all.  UConn and Cincy will be gone as soon as possible, but even if they aren't they won't be what they have been.

Our new conference has some good schools, up and coming schools in football and established schools in basketball.  We now have a conference that reaches into the South Florida area, Charlotte, Virginia Beach area.  All great recruiting areas.  We are a much more regional conference now.  And with the new Fox network, even the TV is looking up.

I do not see anything at all this new conference has over CUSA, and I would imagine the teams who left are really regretting it now.

The bigger regret is that Banowsky's impatience now keeps them from returning. What woulda/coulda/shoulda happened is that CUSA not only retain those schools but that Cincy, UConn USF and Temple would be joining too.

The error in judgment wouldn't be so glaring except that his old friend Thompson's patience was rewarded.

I agree...I refuse to sound like the jilted ex-boyfriend.  We need to do what we can do with what we can control.  Everything else will turn out just fine.

I don't think the newbies will get much:

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/bigeast/2013/03/07/catholic-7-seven-breakup-split-exit-fee-revenue-distribution/1971869/

It is expected the holdovers will get a significantly larger share of that pot, which could approach $100 million, but the exact amounts still have not been determined. That money will be distributed over a 5-to-7 year period, with the first installments being paid before July 1. Final decisions on those amounts will speed up once the settlements with the Catholic 7, as well as Notre Dame, are complete.

UCF fans don't think they are about to get rich either:

    http://ucf.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=71&tid=163212016&mid=163212016&sid=908&style=2

Where did you see that the newbies will be receiving this big windfall?  Hell, they still have exit and entrance fees to pay yet.  I don't see how they will be receiving this big payday.

    1. Why do you and others keep commenting about if/when UConn and Cincy leave? That's peripheral. None of that matters. This is about just keeping up with what we have... any time we would have Cincy and UConn in the league is a bonus.

    2. Seems you were interested in the numbers... but now... oddly(?)... you're not so interested.

    Humor me?

Our share of the $6.6 mil paid by the defectors will end up at about $5 mil. So, effectively, to stay behind, we're getting a $5 million bonus.

What could have been (or still could be?)...

Reportedly, each of the defectors were going to be paying out about $2.5 mil in entrance fees to the NECTBN (New Eastern Conf To Be Named). But now, it's reported that they may have their entrance fees waived, and additionally that they will each get about $3.5 mil from the Catholic 7. (By the way, those "unfortunate" athletic departments at Cincy, UConn and USF will "have to make-do" with $20-$25 million each.)

So, their net for leaving CUSA and keeping things basically as-is in addition to adding annual match-ups with Cincy, UConn, USF and Temple is just over $3 million... or essentially what CUSA schools reportedly made in ONE YEAR of their TV revenue in 2010 according to the AL.com analysis.

    ONE... freakin... year.

Yeah, they're a SAAAAAAAD bunch, those defectors.

So, would I rather us be $5 million to the plus and stuck with competing in the bottom of Group of Five conferences?

Or would I rather us have to shell out about $3 million, but be able to expect at minimum twice the TV revenue and continue to play the competition we're used to playing plus Cincy/UConn for some period of time.

Short term, there's a $8 million difference... pay out $3 mil... versus take-in $5 mil... but project things over 10 years, and there's no comparison.

    3. Hold up. Pride? You don't want to go there. You and others have lost yours. We are not so inferior to UCF, ECU et al that we cannot compete... yet, time and time again in these discussions, I've heard that the private funding dooms us to failure... even though, previous to all of this, the clarion call was always that we were getting as-good-if-not-better talent, but that our coaches keep failing at the coaching part of their job.

    4. Reconsider your Alice in Wonderland schtick and your personal attack/condescension about being a man and all that... the need to resort to that sort of thing says you realize you can't make your rationale strong enough, so you default to silliness to hide the weaknesses of what you're saying. The reality is, though, that many if not most see through it.

    5. "What we control" is still subject to debate. No, really, it is. As long as there continues to be no firm decisions made on the BCS revenue structure, there's still a chance for Kopp to use that leverage.

Maybe Stuart should go over to their board and write a 30 page dissertation on how unenlightened they are.

Oh that we would be in a position to not be happy for the reasons they aren't.

Here's an idea... go over and ask their fans if they'd like to trade places with us... just for yuks. :D

The message boards of the teams jumping to the new unnamed conference are full of posters unhappy about their team's move.  The fans are totally regretting the move.  I particularly like our new conference setup and our new conference mates.  I love the travel and the destinations.  Although I highly doubt Tulsa would now jump to that new conference, for the now obvious reasons, I wouldn't mind a move by them to make room for WKU.

    Now c'mon mckayt... you're dancing.

You know the ones regretting the move are doing so for the same reason some of us regret Banowsky's impatience... it would simply have made more sense to remain in CUSA and not have had any fees.

You also know most of them would laugh you off their board if you proposed trading places.

  • There won't be a big difference in talent or perception of either of the conferences when it's all said and done.

    Talent... true.

Perception... you can't honestly believe that unless you also believe no one perceives a difference b/t the current CUSA and Sun Belt.

Agree with this.  There was no one beating down the doors to add the schools CUSA added.  The smart move would have been to sit tight until the very last possible date.  Stay in touch with those who have announced they were leaving and let them know they would be welcomed back.  On the side keep an open dialog with uc and uconn with an open invitation.

With that strategy I suspect they would have come running back after the multiple blows they've received since agreeing (additional defections, TV, name, etc).

Oh well.  Water under the bridge now.

  • possible that the commish wanted their exit money, the new guys money, liked several of the new schools like some here do AND didnt particularly care about the defectors coming back. In about five yrs Charlotte, ODU, USM, MTSU, UTEP and hopefully MU will make a danged good BB league. I dont care how many TV sets they rep as long as two bids are an every yr thing and maybe the NIT too.

  • Yeah... that's about as realistic as asserting the Big East commishes Marinatto and Arseco were overjoyed to see all these fees flood in, and to gain these lower tier schools and the lesser TV and bowl revenues.

    Hard sell, BHFI. At best.

  • That you resort to the "who knows what he was thinking" defense, and state your determination to find some positive slant suggests, in actuality, you understand the reality approach doesn't work well for your argument. So much dancing. So unnecessary. And ironically, so sadly counterproductive at the moment.

  • I don't doubt that.

But that's what one gets when you let the conclusion desired drive you to absurd lines of reasoning. Always more authentic (and less embarrassing in the end) to let the reasoning lead to the conclusion.
