And if you enjoy southern cookin, hit Paula Deens restaurant. Mrs. Wilkes is also EXTREMELY good. The city bus line is FREE. Most of the drivers are happy to be impromptu tour guides also. Splurch for the hotel and stay on river street.

  • Hilton Head is just a bit north of Savannah.  Nice place to stay.  A little out of the way to the east.

Savannah is a nice city.  Do the city tour and stay on Tybee Island.  Savannah has a signficant crime problem so stay alert and watch where you park.

Jacksonville is nice.  If you have small children the museum is great and there is also a zoo.  They've done a lot with the downtown river area.  There are some nice bed & breakfast's and some nice resorts.

  • All places listed above are nice.  You may want to check out Fernandina Beach, FL.  I was there in summer of 1997 for a weekend.  Very nice and quiet.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernandina_Beach,_Florida

Also, you may want to visit St. Simons or Jekyll Island.  Both are located near Brunswick, GA (about 1 1/2 hrs past Savannah).

  • I also recommend HHI. If you're just doing a 1 day/night on your way down to Florida it's worth the 20-25 minutes out of the way. They have a very nice Comfort Inn on Tanglewood Drive right in the heart of the main town and across the street from Coligny Plaza and Coligny Beach which is a public beach access with restrooms and restaurants. It's not the fanciest of places to stay in HHI but for a short trip it would be the most affordable and give you access to a few popular sites.

  • First off, thanks for all the replies....

Since we're talking vacations, how do you guys find places to stay or vacations in general....

I had a fantastic deal through the military, but now I'm on my own...

I've used priceline, but that's all I really know about as far as deals....

One of bad things about priceline is getting standard rooms with only small microwaves to prepare food....

Any advice is appreciated, we're going August 2-9Th....

  • We just pick out destinations based on what we like. We don't like super touristy places, so we look for quiet beaches. My wife just typically reads reviews online. We've been using VRBO.com for 5 years now and save a ton of money by renting direct from the owner.

  • HHI is great. We have used VRBO for years as well. Rented homes in HHI many times, Outer Banks and Myrtle. We even rented an appartment/condo on 48th St and 8th Avenue in NYC for a stay there. Just as cheap as hotels in Manhattan and we could save some cash by cooking breakfast and coming back for quick rests before heading back out.
I have several buddies who wait the week before they go and then get on VRBO and make a great last minute deal with home/condo owners who dont have a place booked. One guy saved over 6K last summer on a 7 BR beachfront home on Palmetto Dunes in HHI.
