  • Well, the ( 4 ) new sky boxes are complete and all rented (I believe).

    Who's in them?

    1.  As mentioned in the paper, Chad Pennington has one of them.
Chad is our "Gold Standard" here at Marshall and am very
pleased that Chad has continued interest in the Herd.  He can
only bring good things to MU athletics and wish we had a dozen
         of him.

    2.  Heard whispers about another sky box.  I understand Chris Cline,
coal baron and MU graduate along with his Lady Friend has another
box.  Chris donated $5 million to the Vision Campaign for medical
         research in the IPF.

And who, you may ask, is Chris' Lady Friend?  Elin  Nordegren.
Elin Nordegren, 33, is Tiger Woods' ex-wife.  And now a Herd Fan.

Chris Cline, 53, is worth approximately $1.2 Billion and Elin received
approximately $100 Million from Tiger in the settlement.

Needless to say, herd fans should go out of their way showing them
the great hospitality that we are known for.

         $1.2 B and $100 M....not bad.  Would love to see Elin's name on a
new Indoor Tennis Facility at Marshall.  (Just a thought.)

I'm sure others may have info. on the individuals in the other two
         boxes.

Word was that they were all committed for 5 (?) years well before they even had the engineering drawings made up.

  • Yeah I heard they were paid for before we even started on them AND that we have a waiting list on sky boxes.

    SO, my question is this.

If this is true then why not make some boxes on top of the Shewey building. I'm sure those on the waiting list for the other ones would like to sit in and end zone box until the others come available.

I think it would look sweet, and if there is already a demand for it then lets do it.

  • Woody is probably a better source than I, but my understanding is that the Shewey Bldg is not made for any other vertical additions.

The MU Med school has one of the new boxes, as well.

  • USM has some sky boxes in their end zone that have both inside lounge and outside seating to really get the crowd feel.  Met a  Marshall Med school graduate in the one owned by the local hospital last year at our game there.  They were the newest addition to the stadium and were very nice.

That's the claim, they'd have to essentially build a new structure outside of the shewey to support anything on top of it.

It'll never happen, but since we never sell out, or really ever come close, I wish we'd tear down the endzone seats, and put in a club level seating area right there above the original rows of seats. Something like this at Colorado...the black seats are for Club Level ticket holders, there's a huge room behind the seats with tables, concessions, tv's, essentially a Big Green room where you can see the field, but if you want you can also sit outside in your seats

We could build the club level so that if we want to expand in the future, we can just add seats, real seats, above it. Don't put ourselves in a position where we can't do anything about vertical build on the shewey.

I was talking with someone the other day that's a bigger booster, and said if I had $2b to blow, I'd go to Marshall and say here's what we're going to do. Tear down the current suites/press box structure and build a new one. Build the first level as club seating (like the pic above) that goes almost the full length of the stands, then build a row of suites above that, then a third row with the coaches box, pressbox, with some suites on it as well. And build it so that if we ever wanted to add another level with more suites we could do that. Then we'll build closer to field level suites where the current green metal bleachers are in the one endzone.

  • Still want to see an outdoor restaurant on top of the Shewey Building, where you you purchase tickets for the tables to watch the game from there.  Probably never happen, but would look cool.

  • Serious question :
which would generate more cash flow
    Over a ten-year period?

Assuming of course we keep on winning

    A)
Sky boxes built above a retrofitted shewey building?

    B) Putting a second deck of (5,000seats) on
the stadium side that is facing the press box?

    Go Herd!!!!

Slight correction.  I don't believe he graduated.  After a year or two he joined his dad in the coal business.  I met him a few times through a mutual friend.  Nice guy and apparently didn't need a degree to be successful.  :P

    Go Herd!!!!

Based on our past history of attendance when we were winning I can't see filling 45,000 seats unless we

    1) Start having a quality OOC schedule where we're consistently bringing bigger programs to the Joan that have a broad fan base and travel well

     -OR-

    2) Do what's best for the state and renew the wvu series. IMHO that series is the only thing that would consistently put (@/:; in the seats every time it was played. Louisville and Cincinnati are the only other ones that might do it if their programs remain successful. Other than that I can't see us consistently getting high quality BCS programs to come here that would attract the kind of attention needed to sell out the stadium.

I like the idea of taking out the top end zone seating and possibly adding a "party deck" or concession to that area. Then add on those lost seats to the east side.

  • Additional seats really do nothing for revenue.  We don't fill up the stadium.  However, boxes, which cost anywhere from $20-60k a year, add TONS of revenue.  It's really not close.  Even if we filled up the stadium, boxes would be more worthwhile investments.  Boxes are what every single pro and college program wants more of.

  • If we have the demand for a few more boxes I say tear down the metal portion of the endzone and build it up to something similar to what Clemson has below. Will it cut the overall seating capacity? Yes it probably will but the added revenue from the additional boxes should more than offset the cost of losing those seats.

Then in the future if we have the demand we could expand the west side like Louisville recently did with some additional boxes and lodge seating.

  • Elin would be the perfect person to model Herd clothing.

Plus it would hit the national wire services and the Herd would get
millions of dollars in free publicity.  And it would provide Elin some
    excellent positive publicity also.
