Ryan Hopkins made his final appearance at home for the Herd

    Quote
CHARLESTON, W.Va.— Marshall baseball suffered its third conference sweep of the season, falling in a twinbill Sunday 9-1 and 8-3.

On a day meant to honor their contributions to the Herd, seniors Ryan Hopkins (Sardinia, Ohio) and John Beary (Apopka, Fla.) each turned in noteworthy days- Hopkins entered his 66th game for Marshall, taking sole possession of 10th All-Time for Career Pitching Appearances.

Beary smacked two doubles in the nightcap, going 2-for-3 with a run.

    Game 1

A nine run, eight hit first inning propelled Old Dominion to victory in the first game of a double-header.

Marshall reliever Caleb Ross (Barboursville, W.Va.) entered the game in the first inning with two outs, striking out the batter to end the inning. The southpaw worked his longest outing of his Herd career, tossing 4.1 innings and picking up four strikeouts.

Ross retired all 13 batters he faced and did not allow a base runner in his outing.

Marshall avoided the shutout as freshman Spencer Iacovone (Cincinnati, Ohio) knocked a pinch hit homer over the left field fence in the ninth to finalize the score at 9-1.

Junior Eric Escobedo (Troup, Ga.) failed to reach base in the contest, ending his hitting and on-base streaks at 12 games.

    Game 2
Marshall started the second game down, after a leadoff ODU homerun and two more runs in the first put the Monarchs up 3-0.

The Herd scored in the first and second inning to trail by one. Junior TJ Diffenderfer (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) picked up his team-leading 27th RBI with a single through the left side to score sophomore Robert Fajardo (Miami), who boarded with a walk.

In the second inning, doubles from catcher Matt Reed (Purcellville, Va.) and Beary  started the Herd off hot. Reed plated Marshall’s second run on a RBI groundout from freshman Corey Bird (Elkview, W.Va.).

Old Dominion plated four runs in the top of the third to increase its lead, adding another run in the fourth.

The Herd scored again in the fifth when Beary doubled for the second time of the game and plated a third Marshall run on a sacrifice fly from Fajardo.

The Herd will play its final conference series of the season when it travels to Murfreesboro, Tenn. to face Middle Tennesse beginning Thursday, May 15.
