HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall’s Clark Robinson (South Windsor, Conn.), who just completed his freshman golf season with the Thundering Herd, has advanced through U.S. Open local qualifying and will play in one of 10 Open sectional qualifiers on June 2.

Robinson shot a 5-under-par 66 at the Country Club of Farmington in his home state on May 12 to lead the local qualifier for the 114th U.S. Open, scheduled June 12-15 at famed Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina.

The Open local qualifying began across the country with 10,127 players.

Robinson, 19, won an individual college title in his rookie season – the Patriot Intercollegiate in Lorton, Va., last September – and was named to the five-man Conference USA All-Freshman Team last week. His 73.21 stroke average in 2013-14 was a Marshall record for a freshman golfer, and ranks No. 4 on the MU single-season list.

Robinson also has qualified for the 112th Connecticut Amateur Championship, scheduled at Lake of Isles in North Stonington, Conn., from June 16-20.

Two Marshall men’s golf alumni advanced to U.S. Open sectional qualifying as well.

Christian Brand shot a 1-under 70 at the Long Cove Club on Hilton Head Island, S.C., on May 12 to advance, while Shawn Warren fired a 69 for second place at Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth, Mass., to reach the 36-hole, one-day sectional play.
